I put the following coordinates into my sat nav yesterday. I got them from google maps on the internet.

    Latitude: 52.82815 Longitude: -6.22637

This was suppoed to be my destination but the sat nav told me that I was 1100Km away?? Why is that? do I need to correct the coordinates in some way or am I doing something wrong?

What are the settings on your device to display latitudes & longitudes ?
    There are 3 settings .
The picture attached shows them & the format they should be entered.

You'll need to pick the first option for the OPs decimal degrees.

In fact, by the margin of the error it looks like the longitude was entered as East (E) instead of West (W). A negative value indicates West for Longitude.

Yes that's exactly the error (E instead W)

The "-" represents west of greenwich

and on the first latitude figure a "-" represents S (south of the equator)
