Considering what is permitted on 4Chan, it must have been have been an infringement of epic scale indeed.

So somebody had CP and tried to upload it to 4Chan whilst on the UCD internets. Jesus, that is very serious

Oh, sheesh. You learn something every day, but sometimes you wish you hadn't.

That address is for the UCD Proxy server, which is not supposed to be usable from outside UCD. I wouldn't call that impossible, though - crazier things have happened.

you do know some 4chan mods ban people "for teh lulz" as well,it might not be as bad as you think.

Is anyone else not really surprised, that out of the ~25,000 people with access to the internet connection at least one is a paedophile?

IT Services are saying that a lot of PCs on the network were infected with BotNet trojans, and they've been kicking those machines off. This would include laptops with wired or wireless connections. When BotNets are in action, anything is possible: we're talking about PCs just waiting to do their masters' bidding, whatever that bidding might be.

Get your virus checkers updated, and no gloating from the Mac folks - you're also at risk.

What exactly did the OP want to do on 4Chan. Many things go on there, most of them not legal.

Do IT services know what botnet in particular is on the network?

    Are Ubuntu users at risk?

I don't work for IT Services, but why wouldn't they know? Their scanners would just tell them what it is.

Botnet makers generally don't bother with UNIX systems (including Linux) for various reasons, including the low numbers and the fact that they have much better out-of-the-box security these days. According to some reports, many of the Botnets are managed using Linux systems. ;)

'Security Tool' is on at least one of the Arts theatre PCs, don't know if that's what IT Services are referring to though.
