This is probably a stupid question but here it goes. I am painting and staining my stairs and want to know if I need to put a coat of clear varnish over the painted part??

    Short answer ..... Yes.

Dull the finish (paint) with sandpaper or a liquid surface prepping solution. Drag with a damp (wrung) towel or vacuum thoroughly. Apply a marine grade non-yellowing spar varnish - 3 light coats, always sanding between applications.
    Do not use lacquer.
    Good luck.
