    Hello,
I'm graduating with an honours degree in quantity surveying in a few months and was curious as to what the building industry is like over there at the moment. I'm aware that the occupation is on the specialist work visa list but I'm seeing mixed reports about how the construction industry is doing. Do you think I would find it hard to get work and if not where would be the best place to go?
    Cheers,
    Tiernan

Mate your title says moving but your post says planning ?

The work situation here is better than Ireland but they will probably want some experience.

You would probably require at least 2-3 years post qualification experience to pass the skills assessment before you can apply for the visa.

Construction seems to be picking up...I see lots of positions being advertised. There will be nothing at home for a while so it wouldn't be any harm to get in contact with employers and see will they take a chance on you. Many do look for experience though.
(to Brendan..got a place mate thanks)

I don't think OP was talking about a WHV... he did mention something about specialist work visa...which does not exist, I do believe he means a Skilled migration visa.

Like you say Brendan it would be a no brainer to try and get a QS job without experience.... and even if they did pull it off on a WHV that would only last for 6 month because you need previous experience for the sponsorship to stay on.

I fugured he meant Critical Skills List.

Its a bad time for construction professionals coming out of college. Glad I have afew years experience.

I got offered a job right there and then at my second job interview 5 years ago in Dublin. Was a great time to be starting out.

Critical skills is no longer.....its in the process of being phased out, anyway its still part of the skilled migration.

Construction tends to go in Cycles here, I know people who said that there was a work dry period around 2002.... and this was after the boom of Olympic park and associated infrastructure (1997-2000) but when I came here in Dec 2004 it was booming.

    Lane Cove Tunnel
    Cross city Tunnel
    M7 west link
    Northwest T-Way

All running at same time 2003/2004---2007.

Its been quiet last 2 years... but with the NSW government F**Ked things up they cant make up their mind.. They are talking about 3 or 4 major Civil jobs but that all it is talk.... all the big gaffers are spending millions tendering and the job gets pulled before they get it off the drawing table.

What I am hearing is that the NSW labour government is to get the shoe next year unless they pull a few rabbits out of the hat... example the NW rail line..they are talking about starting 2017... if the Libs come up with an earlier time frame they could get them in and they would have to release what they promised... these jobs are a minimum 5 years of civil work..
