In the movie Billy Elliot, why were the miners on strike? What was Margaret Thatcher doing?

She was the Prime Minister of England at that time, during the period of the industrial revolution. The miners were on strike because they were going to receive fewer workers rights and pay.

The miners were protesting about threatened pit closures and changes to their working conditions and rights. It was a a long standoff between Maggie Thatcher and the Tories versus Arthur Scargill and the Miners......the scene near the end of Billy Elliot (where the downtrodden miners silently return to work and are lowered in that cage down into the mine) says it all.
