I just checked the radar prior to the dog walk & there is a lump of rain to the West of Connemara. Clicking on animation it appears that this has grown in intensity but not really moved. What holds showers in one place & why don't they just die out ?.

It is an area of convergence. All winds are blowing in towards the shower keeping a mix of airmasses that feed the shower.

I did wonder if that was the cause. I had the same thing last week when a strong sea breeze seemed to be acting against the Northerly wind so showers, showing up on the radar as moving south, slowed down as they got close to the sea.
