After the Geoghan murder I wondered if that killing would be the tipping point for strong action against the criminal families here in Limerick.

Then came the Collins murder and I wondered the same, and hoped that illegal gun possession and gun crime would finally start getting the sentences that that was promised over and over. I mean what happened to the minimum of ten years for illegal possession of firearms?

Now another person is murdered, and again there seems to be a link to the same crime family as a member of the murdered man's family gave evidence in a murder trial against that crime family.

Is it just going to be let get to the stage that these scum will become almost untouchable because people will no longer be willing to stand in court against them?

do they have CC TV in that petrol station I wonder?

There are plenty of cameras in that station. Both on the forecourt and in the shop.

The only small mercy in this killing is that the scum did not turn the gun on anyone else in the area.

Yet again someone is shot in Limerick and yet again it degenerates into a "sure dublin is worse!" reverse pissing contest, doesnt matter if 100's of people a year are killed in Dublin, people are being killed here in public areas during what would be considered "safe" hours, you dont expect to get shot on a Monday morning on one of the busiest roads in the city.
Agree with what was said earlier where the guards will appear to be really, really serious this time about doing something, it'll be bluster and soundbites for the media for a few weeks, then back to square one, all the while these scumbags will sleep soundly knowing normal people are too afraid to say anything as they havent a hope of being protected by the gardai

    Read what was posted.
Nobody from Limerick was trying to deflect the issue at hand, just pointing out the absolutely drivel that Pete posted as regards killings in Dublin.

I think we are already at that stage. They must have known also that Mr. Treacy had no police protection so either they had that bread route under surveillance, they received a casual tip off from one of their "followers" or <SNIP> which I don't rule out.

Its the fact they had the sheer neck to do something like this on a busy commuter road at the start of a working week. I mean if they want to kill and shoot at each other, nobody really cares as long as they keep it in their estates. When it starts spilling into areas where an innocent passerby could be hit too, then its time for the gardai to put on the steel toe boots and drive it into the balls of these scumbag familys.

i get what your saying, but its easy to forget that their are plenty of innocent people living in these estates too. i reckon its about time we brought internment back, turn the tables on those ****head black & tan descendants.

Mike - I've edited your post. Please don't make unfounded allegations like that.

yep, any staff there are both lucky and unlucky.

Lucky in that the gun was not turned on them, but unlucky in that if they open their mouths and say they saw anything, then they are easy to find.

The guy probably had hoodie/scarf or whatever covering his face, so CCTV or eye witness account won't stand for much (apart from height/build maybe).

And who do you think would be locked up if they brought back internment? It would be the plenty of innocent people living in certain estates you're so concerned about in your first sentence.

It's not internment we need, but more resources to follow the money to take the profit out of the hands of these gangs. Internment would change nothing because once the guys in jail still have their money they can bring guys in to do the dirty work.

Remember, if a housewife in Ennis can hire a hit man from abroad, so can the real nasty guys.

height/build will be good clues to tell if the usual fellow did it

Imprisoned gang members should be forced into solitary confinement, that would at least stop them from continuing to exercise influence while locked up.

Problem is mike its some junkie muppet who did this murder, just like Roy Collins murder, that I have no doubt. He will be caught and keep his mouth shut. Meanwhile the psychos who ordered will get some other junkie muppet to do their next hit. We all know who orders these murders, even though they are in prison. Can't wait until one of the Dundons gets shot, oh I will drink to his death I tell you.

I'm assuming this is a reference towards the theory that the rougher towns in Ireland were all garrisson towns of the british and had a large number of soldiers stationed there. These soldiers were the worst of scum from England and they bred with the local women of the area, creating a new generation of local scum.

I can't remember the in's and outs of the theory but it is something like that.

People should mind their comments in here. Don't you know that the media often take quote's from these forum's for their articles.

Going on the guy arrested anyway, the case is all wrapped up.

No doubt Glean Geasley and Sean Callinan will take careful note of what happened this morning.

RTE say the Scumdons are not responsible, and that it is related to the Darren Coughlan murder in 2005

Doubt its related to Darren Coughlan murder. The dead man has 2 scumbag brothers - Owen and Richard. The latter is serving a sentence for killing Darren. This definitely has to do with Owen Treacy giving evidence, no doubt about it

Paul Reynolds on RTE was just saying different. He is very well informed and it was his opinion that it was in relation to the Coughlan murder.

Here's article to the 3 who were concivted for Coughlan killing for those who may not remember
    http://www.rte.ie/news/2007/0730/limerick.html

I am convinced it was for Treacy testifying, the Dundons have previous for killing relatives of witnesses i.e. Roy Collins. Anyway this was an innocent man going about an honest days work delivering bread. And the Gardai knew he was a potential target due to his brother testifying, why the hell was he not under Garda escort. The Gardai will have lot to answer for I reckon.
