    Hi guys,

I'm working as a software tester at the minute and I was wondering how the IT sector is over in Oz and NZ?
Is it hard to find work over there?
I have two years exp and would ideally like to land myself an IT job on a 6 month contract basis in one of the big cities to save up some bucks to allow me to do some more travelling.
Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated guys thanks!

It all depends on how much experience you have. If you have some substantial experience, I expect that you won't have any bother landing yourself a 3-6 month contract.

Have a look on www.seek.com.au and just filter IT&T then QA/Testers. Last time I checked a couple of weeks ago, there were almost 800 jobs advertised!

    Cheers for that lad.
I will stay at home for another while then and try and build up another years experience. If I get to three years exp I will be happy.

Wellington seems to be bouncing back quite nicely, I get daily IT job alerts from the main job site here, seek.co.nz, and each day it's about 25 to 35 new jobs. Of course a lot of those are recruitment agents and who knows how trustworthy they are, but it's still a good indication that after new year, companies are actively getting out there.

Things to note are you can't buy experience, so continuing on to get over two years where you are might be a good idea. It also helps to get your hands on a few certificates or what-have-you. Even though the specific ones you get there may not be so highly thought of over here, it's no harm to prove you are at a high level. Also if you've only got experience with a small number of roles, to your best to investigate or try out other technologies like automated testing as it'll look good in interviews to at least know about options, even if you haven't used them.

Thanks for that man. I must join that mailing list.
I have some experience with QTP and LoadRunner but I mainly focus on manual testing.
There seems to be plenty of jobs on that Seek site.
Did you find that the recruitment sites are as dodgy as the ones over here - posting up heaps of 'fake' jobs just to farm details from loads of applicants?
Thanks again for the advice Delorian

I have found here that most of the ads are actually jobs, but sometimes you have a load of agencies advertising the same jobs. These are usually easy to spot though.

Nothing at all like Dublin. In 2008 I found it so frustrating trying to find a job amonst all the fake ads. I hope never to have to deal with agencies back there again.

On a brighter note, I put in my application for my 457 visa today. :)

    Congrats boss!

Recruitment agencies at home here are a complete balls. Sites like irishjobs.ie rip the **** out of things altogether.

I thought they were all great over here when I started looking and met them but after a while began to realise I think they're nicer and come on quite strong, but are by-and-large the same useless ba$tards when it comes down to it. I met about 15 with quite a strong CV and (I know it was the peak of the recession) I only got one casual, coffee interview. I got another by myself (got and took that job), and since then have gotten about 5 interviews by myself and 2 through one particular agent. The last one I got through the agent I've taken and I have to say, that agent is top-dollar. So if you are going to Wellington looking for work, let me know and I'd be happy to pass on their details.

    Much appreciated Delorian.
I will hold you to that if I ever get round to making it over!
