First things first, why not Cork! If Cork where to win Sam this year it would be a change and revitalise the Championship. If Cork where to win this year it would be no less a breath of fresh air than had Mayo's failed attempts in the late '90's or mid '00 succeeded or Tyrone's initial failed attempts in the '90s or Cork's initial failings the late '80s. Cork has not broken through to win Sam yet. So Cork winning would be no less legitimate than Cork, Tyrone, Galway or say Down when they broke onto the scene and finally won Sam, be it a slow slog like Cork 20 years ago & Tyrone or the apparent race from the pack like Galway or Down.

Derry, Kildare or Mayo are unlikely to win Sam, a final appearance may be on the cards, I would add Galway and Dublin to that list (well Galway for the quarters ;) ). Mayo and maybe Dublin IMO will be the best of this lot.

Lastly re Roscommon, as much as I would love to see a stronger Primrose & Blue, which would both raise the prestige and standards in Connacht, I think you should be happy to build and set yourselves targets. This would include divisional survival and thereafter in coming years promotion, Connacht titles and Under age Connacht titles (and A.I.s if you get a good run). Then you can build for Sam. However you need to be at the top of the pile in Connacht, good underage standing, div.1 or a top performer in div.2 before you can prepare to dream (or perhaps delude yourself, like Mayo & Dublin fans amongst others)

Mea culpa. Nothing wrong with Cork winning it either but I just dont think that there would be the same level of excitement over Cork winning anything as they win an All Ireland of some description every year minor, u21 senior in both codes. And they would not be the most popular team among the gaels considering their egotistical antics of recent years. Personally I would not mind seeing the footballers win an AI but it would not be the shot in the arm it would be if Kildare, Derry, Mayo or Down won it. Thats all

It will be either Tyrone or Kerry again this year, Cork don't have the bottle to win an All Ireland, I wouldn't be surpised if they beat Kerry in an all ireland semi final and then lost to Tyrone in the final/

As for Dublin, the best thing that could happen is that they lose in Leinster and come through the qualifiers undetected and completely underrated.

Anyone think Meath could be outsiders or am I dreaming?
Two All-Ireland semi final apperances in the last 3 years....

    I'm dreaming aren't I?

Definatly dreaming I'm afraid... I'd love nothing more than been back in All-Ireland final but we've no chance I'm afraid :(:(

Kerry games must be the only time you watch Mayo play football; I hazard to guess you haven't seen us play too often otherwise; Mayo games tend to be very exciting.

I have seen Mayo play often, i am not saying they aren't a skillful team, or that i don't like watching them, as i do, but i have a fondness for Galway that goes beyond that, bourne out by Ja fallon, Michael Donnelan etc.

Mayo have been unlucky not to get at least one all ireland between 1996-2006
how about instead of looking to 4 years later from Galway’s 2000 defeat to Kerry to looking a 3 earlier, Mayo came 1 point closer in to beating Kerry than Galway did in '00.

You may be a bit young, and don't remember 2000, but i was at the match which ended in a draw (14 points a piece if i recall correctly) and had to go to a replay so i don't accept that mayo got closer.

That said, mayo were beaten by one man that year.

Don't get your hopes up based on this whatever you do!

Galway's league form in the last few years has been good and we've regularly been top of the of the table and getting to league finals etc., but look where that got us in the Summer. Nowhere! It only raised false hopes and got alot of people thinking that this Galway team was better than it really was.

When the ball is thrown in at the start of the championship league form often goes straight out the window.

Yes I am basing my hopes on it, the league title hopes thats is. Its a National title and more fool anyone who doesn't take it serious and go all out to win it. I was also happy to hear Galway got a great win over Tyrone, Joe Bergin looked really good on TG4, some of his points where real belters, nice one from Sice too. Actually it cheered me to hear it was an all round good day for Connacht. Got excited when I saw Galway playing so well, makes beating you more fun and worthwhile ;)

No I am not basing my Connacht Championship or All-Ireland Championship on these games, different competition, different beast.

Just posted this because the usual rubbish that appears about Mayo gach la. Mayo joint favourates to get demoted  and not for the first year. 1996-2010 and still a Divison 1 team

Hard to look past Cork for the National League Title.

Looking at it in this moment in time this looks like there could be open champiosnhip this year. There few teams playing well and seem to have improvement in them.

Cork have few decent lads coming through from what i hear. I think they might be team to beat but like few of you have said they bottle it on big ocassions, but think they might just get over the line this year with Kerry being in a decline maybe for 1 or 2 years now they lost few there players but of course they always be a massive danger once they get sniff of glory.

League titles are no harm, you'd rather win it than get relegated that's for sure. But in the long run they don't mean an awful lot. I could name you every All-Ireland winner of every year probably back to the early 60s just off the top of my head. As for the league, I'd barely remember who won it 3 or 4 years ago never mind going back any further. Ultimately one All-Ireland medal is worth more than any amount of league medals. If Mayo win the league that's good and well but I daresay there will hardly be dancing in the streets of Castlebar and Ballina even if they do.

Hard to look past Cork for the National League Title.

A Mayo-Cork final looks a good bet now, they've probably been the two most impressive teams so far. Dublin are in with a shout too, and the rest are all in relegation bother to some degree.

It wouldn't be a huge shock for Mayo to reach the all-ireland final this year IMO. Who predicted they would get to the final in '04 (after defeating the champions) and '06 (the great comeback against Dublin) ?

You never hear Mayo fans saying that we might even have the smallest chance. After all the disappointment of the last 14 years to be hopeful is to be naive. Sure how could we ever hope to defeat any of the big teams on All-Ireland day in Croker?

Let them tighten up the defence this year and stop kicking stupid wides and short balls in. We'll see how far Mayo get.

You can talk about the provincial championships being devalued due to the backdoor system but there's always a great buzz around any of the big towns whenever the Connacht Final rolls around.

As for Kerry, I wouldn't base much on a league match but they do look weaker this year. It'll be interesting to see if Cork can turn it up a notch.

While it wouldn't be a huge shock for Mayo to get to the final it would be a monumental shock for them to win Sam. They would probably have to beat 2 from Tyrone Cork and Kerry - never going to happen.
Mayo are on the right track and may get to a lge final, but I still could not see them winning that. Cork are playing well at the moment, putting up big scores from play - though they are conceeding too much. They seem to be using alot of the U21 team from last year , to very good effect. It should be an interesting finish to the lge, and then the Summer - bring it on - Cork for Sam.... eventually.... and worthy winners they will be... here's hoping!!

They are presenting Cork the NFL title in a fortnights time, let them enjoy that assured victory first. ;)

Kerry to reign supreme in september as far as im concerned.losing the likes of dara, tommy and flately will act as a reason for wrting them off which will suit kerry down to the ground.

they are starting to find form again and mike mac returing will help tomas o se stay half back where he is most dangerous.

I think Cork will make a very serious push this year. There is definitley an All Ireland in them and its not that far off.

such a winded statement that. We dubs love our gaa and yet this endless crap about Dublin being over hyped comes out every year. We are not that self involved believe it or not

In the Chokers V Chokers Final, I'll go with the Chokers who can keep their defeats 12 points or under ;) Mayo to win by virtue of choking by far less.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,377 ✭✭✭Warper

Kerry are 3-1 to win Sam with Paddy Power. This is one of the biggest prices they have been at the start of the Championship in a long while. The only downside is they seem to perform better when they have lost in the previous All-Ireland but still 3-1 will definitely get you a good run for your money.

I think it will be a Kerry Tyrone final which Kerry will win and break their hoodoo with Tyrone. Cork or Mayo cannot beat Kerry in Croke Park nor can Galway. Monaghan are another team under the radar who will cause alot of strife for teams this year and could be the team who will beat Kerry if any team will do it.

My money will be on a Kerry Tyrone or Galway final but think Kerry will make the final again and have a great U-21 team spurning new talent which will help them immensely.

Either that or a Cork double, Cork will take down Kilkenny this year in hurling for sure.

Really don't know what you're basing this on. A couple of years ago they looked like a team on the verge of a breakthrough but they haven't progressed since. A quarter final appearance is probably as far as they'd go.

So as we approch the National Football Final weekend are we about to see a set of pretenders or will we see one or more genuine heirs to the crown. Cork have already assumed such a position, will little old Mayo have to wait in line behind Dublin, Galway, Derry, Armagh, Monaghan, Kildare, Down, Meath, Donegal and of course CORK, Kerry and Tyrone.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 884 ✭✭✭spider guardian

every county apart from kerry and tyrone will be pretenders to the throne until the deadlock is broken.

the league final will determine who is the lesser pretender... although the cork boys will still retain their sense of entitlement no matter what the result!

Your not exactly proving them wrong Shamo!

That said, i wouldn't be surprised if game of the year this year includes cork regardless of how the championship pans out. Would like to see cork and dublin/galway meet at some stage.

This year should be good, the kerry/tyrone don't seem to be as strong as they were, some of the other top tier teams coming on strong, and hopefully a couple of surprise runs from lower tier teams like wicklow last year.

A casual spectator such as myself has a lot to look forward to :)

O ya I forgot Cork won so many senior titles in the last decade. Thank God for Cork, the only team that makes Mayo look good on A.I. day :D

Please remind me how Cork earned this Emperor Elect status? I seem to remember Cork - Provincial Champions, Mayo - Provincial Champions, fck all else to seperate them.

Apologies Kerry 0.16 Cork 1.09, I was confusing it with Kerry 3.13 Cork 1.09.

I would fancy meeting a team that can only score 1.09 in an All-Ireland Final.

Maybe because they were good enough to actually get in the final last year? ( if you are not in it......)
Maybe because we actually beat both of the Big 2 in the championship last year ?
Maybe because we have a football team that many neutrals believe are best positioned to 'break the monopoly'?
Maybe because we won back to back Provincial titles despite having Kerry in it ( they are afterall going for 5 or 6 or..... continuous All Ireland final appearances in a row )
    Not sure really:confused:

    Wow you are blinkered.

I'm sure cork would fancy meeting a team that conceded 4-15 in the all ireland final the year before that.

Both these statements are irrelevant. Its the NFL, for teams of mayo's and cork's calibre it is merely a talking point and a build up to the championship.
