Slow Connection on Eircom 7MB package

I upgraded from the 3MB connection to the 7MB package on eircom recently, but I haven't noticed any difference at all. I get around 200k/s downloading and the speedtest.net site records a download speed of 2.33 Mb/s

This really is no better than the 3MB connection I had previously. Have I got some router settings wrong or is it just the max the phone line can handle.

I've never got more than 200k/s downloading...it's pretty poor to be honest. I'd be expecting at least 500k/s on a 7MB line.

    Any ideas?

Your upload speed is right for the synced speed but somethings definetly up with your download speed. Try running a test on http://www.pingtest.net

Big difference in the pings there, go into command prompt and run:
    ping boards.ie

Run another speed test later or first thing in the morning, could be due to contention.

Just did another one there, a bit better, must be the contention alright:

So I need to wait till the middle of the night if I want to get anywhere near the full speed out of my internet connection? What a balls!

    Thats identical to mine.

I think ur in cork are u? Im city centre. 7MB package also. Iv been ringing and posing on eircoms forums tthe last two weeks. You need to contact them and keep annoying them, or else they wont change anything.

    http://eircomconnect.eircom.net/Forum/default.aspx -> broadband ->

Theres number of threads in there but the "botched" and "major speed issues" are the ones to post in. The more people who complain the quicker the fix willl be. Make sure u state ur location.

Cork and Limerick don't have enough 10gbit Lambdas lit on the backbone where Galway does.

Here are my pings on a 7mbit eircom line with no congestion between my current location and Dublin

Not trying to hijack but there seems to be an enormous number of people suffering slowdown in the evening. I am with Vodafone and O2 before that. Evenings are so bad its pretty much impossible to play online games with a ping that fluctuates so badly.

ANyway I mailed Vodafone support and they told me about the upgrades currently underway and that they were monitoring these things in certain areas (not mine I might add). Anyway he said that the vast majority of their customers are not effected by this problem. I'd argue that the vast majority of their customers are effected... but just don't know it. Most peeps probably wouldn't notice a high ping or 7mb bb working at 2mb. Thats probably why the 'vast majority' are happy.

Enygam, The speed Eircom allowed down your line is wrong.

Ring them and tell them to allow 7Mb/7168 kbps not 6Mb/6144 kbps . They done the same thing to me.

The contention ratio of my/your package is 48:1, well that is what I was told on the phone tonight from broadband support. (But when I signed up to the 7Mb the contention was 24:1)

Speeds I'm getting now are shi*e.
