Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Howya lads,

    quick question about impedances...

If i connect two 4 ohm speakers in series, then is the total impedance is doubled to 8 ohms, but if i connect them in parallel, the impedance is halved to 2 ohms?

Basically, in a very roundabout way, what i need to know is if i connect 2 x 4 ohm speakers in series to each side of a 2 channel power amp, am i running it at 4 ohms?

sorry if i confuse you, but i've already confused myself

connect 2 x 4 ohm speakers in series to each side of a 2 channel power amp

    This sentence needs clarification. :)

Two 4 ohm speakers in series will present an 8 ohm load.

You can't connect a series of speakers to two channels of an amp unless you're bridging the two channels. In which case you're connecting them to a single bridged amp, rather than to each side as such.

If you connect each speaker to each side of the amp, then you're talking 4 ohms per channel.

i think you have me wrong there, here's roughly what i mean:
    amp left channel
    bass bin 1
    high freq 1
    amp right channel
    bass bin 2
    high freq 2

When you say speaker, you mean speaker cabinet? You can't run a subwoofer and a mid/high in series. I presume you're talking about plugging a speaker cable from the amp to the subwoofer and then from the parallel out of the subwoofer to the mid/high, in which case your speaker cabinets will be in parallel.
