Skoda Octavia Air-con problem

Folks, looking for a bit of direction.

Aircon on my uncle's 2007 1.9TDi Skoda Octavia is broken. I believe its climate control.

The aircon will not work. He has dropped it in to a well known main dealer and they simply say it needs a new compressor fitted at a cost of €1400.

Another small indy garage has said that they checked the compressor and that they simply could not see any power getting to the compressor and that it is more likely something else and not the compressor.

I think the main dealer put it on diagnostics and because no power was going to the compressor it came back with the error code for a faulty compressor.

btw - the switch lights up for the aircon and it works when on hot.

Any help??? direction to point him for a good specialist who could solve the mystery?? (up north if needed but ideally near Dublin)

Air Con compressors can go on VAG cars. My Leons went but was thankfully covered under warranty. That was a €1600 bill otherwise. The Valeo compressors are a known weak spot. It would be worth trying to get it covered under good will though - you might be lucky

    Cheers IanVW,

I will pass that info on - but that means the system would have no gas - correct? it seems that its still has gas as they checked it and it had.

I saw a guy operating in Tallaght - John Kenealy - might give him a bell and if he can shed any light on the issue??????

I've used John before, only for regassing mind. I've always found him a gentleman, and he appears to know his stuff.

Hi, I did a Google on my (08) Skoda Octavia air-con problem and I found this post, so sorry for resurrecting it, but I wonder if I can explain my symptoms and see if anyone can put their finger on the likely problem? There aren't too many auto air-con experts near where I live, and I was warned about the only one I do know about.....and he's not that close anyway! I would happily visit any recommended guy in Dublin...Tallaght would be fine.

The cool air output has been getting gradually (a) slower to cool, and now (b) hardly cooling at all. When it has been on for a long time, it does cool slightly, but there is a strong odour of "back-of-the-fridge" from the air, which prompts the windows to be opened, which defeats the whole process!

Is it just regassing that it needs? If so, is there a leaking component too that needs replacing? Or is it more likely to be the pump or compressor that needs replacing, which I have heard can be a regular problem with these buses?

    Many thanks

Probably a regas, but you might also have a leak, which a regas won't sort for long.

That's what I figured! My local motor factors sells a small gas canister (about the size of a small fire extinguisher) with a gauge on top for €100, just for regassing....he and I both thought it was a huge price...but if there was a leak too, ....back to your point! Is there a known weak spot for leaks that could also be investigated?

If I knew of a guy that was recommended I would ask him to do a proper diagnosis and take it from there.

It will almost certainly need regassing but there may be a leak or other problem as well.

www.carairconditioning.ie (Tallaght) and www.autoair.ie (Dunshaughlin, Co Meath) have been recommended on this forum previously, I myself have used www.caraircon.ie (Kilcock, Co. Kildare) to replace a condensor rad for far cheaper than a Fiat main dealer was quoting.

Fastfit do a very good deal on air con refills for €35. Pretty sure they check for leaks as well so I would give them a go first if there is one near you.
