    Hi there,

Last year I completed an album of what can only be described as "ambient trip hop" - taking cues from Boards Of Canada, The Orb, Susumu Yokota, Eno etc.

I've explored the self release route and its not one I am able to go down at the moment, so I want to send it to some labels. Problem is, I'm not really sure what labels are out there for this kind of music - either I go to the likes of Astral Werks (who are probably too big), or some tiny label that wouldn't really be able to do much with it.

Anyone know of good places to start?

Some of the tracks are here:

    Cheers.

That's pretty good. I like Pablo a lot - its very like ulrich schnauss.

What about approaching the nightmares on wax guys? They started an independant label http://www.waxonrecords.com/blog/

    Maybe approach Warp Records?

Warp are on my list. Thanks for the tips. I'll look into these.

Problem I'm having is classifcation - I need to be able to easily describe the music in either a press release or press kit that goes with the demo. Its not really "electronic" or strictly speaking "ambient", there's more live instruments than that suggests. Nor is it strictly "trip hop". Can anyone help me come up with a neat description, based on the tracks above? Downtempo something or other maybe!

I didn't think it sounded THAT much like him - I checked out a couple of his tracks. I've never heard of him before. Signed to Domino though - that's a cool label.

i meant ulrich strauss as in coffee table electronica.

i think you're on the wrong track worrying if it is "strictly" one thing or another. describe it. in a few lines. and annoy the **** out of everyone with mp3s/cdrs, get gigs etc. no?

I like that, "coffee table electronica". I might use that one! :-)

Haven't built up the ability to play it live yet, pretty hard with all the samples etc, but yeah I'll start banging out the CDs etc. Do you think it'd be a good idea to present shorter edits of the tracks as they are all 8 / 9 minutes long? Maybe have the short versions and also the longer versions on the CD so they can hear the whole thing?

Yeah I like the "give it away" model to get music heard and out there. In fact, if you click the link in my signature, you'll see that I've been doing that for the last few years with all the music I've created.

I've just added the full album these tracks are from to the website, the link is
http://www.robertcrosbie.net/light.html, I'll stick a thread up but go ahead and download it and hope you enjoy it.

Try asking the Psychonavigation lads or the Chillage heads, they know what's what in that corner...

Cheers, I dropped Psychonavigation a line and asked if they were taking demos.
