Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

so anyone within 50 yards, facing goal, can, within the laws, be sent off if the refs wants? seen as by his interpretation then, it's completely up to the ref to judge the goalscoring opportunity.

the area gets depressingly grey if that's the case.

The laws of the game are left to the interpretation of the referee which, is why there are so many inconsistencies imo.

ah it's Poll, just being Poll.

controversial for the sake of it.

how he can headline an article like that and not explain how Vidic shouldn't be sent off, because going by the rest of the article, he mentions goalscoring opportunity. is he saying Gabby's wasn't.

    i repeat, he's just being a smart-arse.

Clouding the issue is the first coming together/pull back, IMO ref did not see that so can't be judged on that.

An alternative look at the Vidic foul.

Before I'm slated in the responses, I do realise this is not the current interpretation of the rules, its just my suggestion on how I would like to see things interpreted.

My view on the incident was that Vidic dragged Abonglahor to the ground inside the box, denying him a goalscoring opportunity. Lets analyse this foul in two parts.
    1) The tackle.
    2) The position/ situation with respect to a penalty.

The first part should be the same anywhere in the pitch. If the tackle is worth of a yellow or red on the halfway line then it should be the same in the box. Too often are penalties and red cards handed out together.
In the Vidic incident, I think the tackle was worthy of a yellow, just because of the blatant shirt pulling and dragging to the ground. The tackle was not dangerous, but it was cynical.

The second aspect should be, was Abonglahors position more or less favourable than a penalty? I would say it was definitely less favorable. Therefore I think it is reasonable to say, the penalty is just reward for the foul and no extra punishment should be given to Vidic. If for example, there was no keeper, or a player handballs on the line, an extra yellow could be added.

Using this approach I think penalty and yellow for Vidic would be a fair punishment for the tackle.

I hope I explained my idea well enough. I just think too many matches are ruined by penalty + red card punishments for what would hardly be a yellow card tackle anywhere else on the pitch.

As an aside, I think an initiative should be introduced where if a player attempts to get his shot away by being fouled, referees are advised to bring it back for a penalty, if no advantage (i.e goal) is taken. It would encourage players to stay on their feet, if they thought they might get a second chance if they fail to score due to a foul.
