Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Busted new 1tb Hard dive?!?

    Hi there!

I recently got a Seagate 1tb external HD on recommendation that a previous external hard drive was on the way out and that I should get a new drive and back up.

Last night when I was going to bed (tired) I was moving my laptop forgetting I had a new external HD.. so it fell about 40 centimeters to the floor.

I picked it up and ran HD tune on it and its health status was OK.

But today I ran HD Tune and I got this.

    (05) Reallocated Sector Count

Number Date/Time Current Worst ThresholdData Temp

    1 25/02/2010 22:04:30 90 90 36 427

    2 25/02/2010 22:05:32 90 90 36 427

    3 25/02/2010 22:06:33 90 90 36 427

    4 25/02/2010 22:07:43 90 90 36 427

    5 25/02/2010 22:08:11 90 90 36 427

PLEASE tell me that my new drive is not gone... please :( ... I spent over 100 euros on it, and Ive had a string of failing HDs in the past few months... arghhh!

In my experience if they get any knock at all, they're on borrowed time. I had a seagate 1TB that I just knocked over while it was spinning, and it packed up pretty much straight away.

    I can't believe it :/

I literally went all out on this 1TB drive as a long term investment towards never having to loose anything again.. I just have everything backed up onto it and now its gone..

    I just can't believe it..

So do you recommend getting a new drive and backing up again? Since this is meant to be my main 'backed up forever' (sturdy stable drive) ...

Do you think its up to that job anymore?

Sorry, but if it got a fall then its more than likely goosed. Hard drives are like a little record player inside, don't take to any sort of fall at all, in fact if it's still working I'd not trust it at all.

If its a desktop, get an internal, they dont tend to get knocked off the desk :D

Reallocated sector count value decreasing is usually terminal (yours initially had a value of 100, it's now 90); you would really need to see the raw value, and monitor it over time. I use DiskCheckup myself to monitor disk health. Raw value should be 0. If raw value increases, it means sectors are being reassigned, and in the case of a drop, could mean the head impacted the surface of the platter, causing hundreds/thousands of particles to fly around the insides. But maybe the damage was limited; only way to determine is to monitor.

I'd be wary though, especially since the alert came after it was dropped.

Back up your stuff to another drive ASAP because that drives days are more than likely numbered.

If the stuff you are backing up is irreplaceable you should have dvd/bluray backups + hard disk backup + offsite storage backup....I learned this the hard way. sorry about the dying drive :(

I think you should be safe enough there ;). Don't go too hard on the pitch slider though, they tend not to be the most robust on Numarks.
