Eircom BB and Fastpath

Had a good trawl through the forums and couldn't find anything concrete...

but has anyone actually had any success in getting fastpath enabled on their eircom BB line?

I know they can do it but the monkeys in customer support just churn out responses like broken records!

My BT line is running on Fastpath and for gaming it's amazing! 10ms ping time in comparison to my low level interleaving with eircom which is around the 35ms mark, game play is noticeabley different and quite laggy at times on the eircom connection.

I've experienced no issues whatsoever using fastpath on my BT line with very similar stats and BT did it within a 2 minute phone call.

I mean worst case scenario, I can try it and if it's unstable switch back..

so cliff notes, has anyone managed to get fast path enabled with eircom as of yet?

I think im on fastpath, get about 8ms to Irish servers and 18ms to Uk ones.

Don't know if I've got my info right, but I'm on Eircom (3Mb down, .5Mb up), there's a section in the router that says:

    Data path: fast

    I've never had a ping under 30ms.

I was on 7Mb and downgraded when the interleaving was awful a year and a half ago - it's not still like that is it?

the 7 and 7.6meg packages can be changed to low ping if ye ring up usually, thats what I did. my ping used to be 80ms, now its 8ms.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 854 ✭✭✭iknorr

eircom only do fast path on the 24mb connection. interleaving can only be set to low or high on all other packages.

What did they do to get ur ping from 80ms to 8?

I presumed they just changed their settings, i dont know how it works, im not even sure if im on fastpath but my pings certainly point towards it. A good few others on boards.ie got their pings lowered as well.

If you go to a command prompt window and type

    telnet 192.168.1.254

    login as Admin

    and then type

    show dsl all

what results do you get ?

I try that and get a error:
'telnet' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
    operable program or batch file.

For Windows Vista and Windows 7 users, to enable telnet it's

Start - Control Panel - Programs - Programs and Features - Turn windows features on or off - tick the box that says Telnet Client (do not tick telnet server) - Click OK

    Thanks that worked.

But them results can be gotten from visiting the DSL stats page of your router at 192.168.1.254...?

that is quite good. Im getting better results from my net tonight after they dropped the interleaving to low earlier. Best ping is 35ms though.

The web interface only gives partial results, the telnet interface gives much more detailed results.

Could you check in your DSL stats page if the data path is fastpath or interleaved please? Your ping certainly suggests that you are..I'm mighty jealous :)

I already have interleaving set to low but gaming simply isn't the same as being on fastpath, I can really notice the difference between my two lines.

Ping is slightly better today giving me 25-30ms but I'd like it to be on par with my BT line before I part with it, that usually gives me 10 ms and gaming is a joy on it!

I've attached what my BT line stats say and pings below, eircom connection is on interleaving unfortunately :/

If eircom don't do fastpath on their 7meg connections, how come their resellers have the option to do so?

Really seems like more of a case of that they have made it their policy not to put people on fastpath...

Gonzo could you state precisely and in unambigous steps what you did to get your ping so nice please?:)

Did you go through first level of tech support to get it done and did you request fastpath or / and low interleaving? Also did your speed drop as I remember a few other posters having success way back but what was in fact done was that Eircom simply switched them to the lower speed packages which had lower interleaving.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 16,933 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gonzo

I rang Eircom and was put through to tech support and told them that my ping was very high, that it used to be much lower when I was on 3meg. My line was also not upgraded to the full speed of 7.6meg, it was only 5meg. I told them that response time to get from one website to another was slow because of the ping time. I told them that I wanted a lower ping for gaming and quickness in browseing webpages (which slowed down alot as soon as I went from 3meg to 5meg). I also said I heard that others on the same package got their pings reduced and I wanted same. A few minutes after the phonecall i checked my line and my pings were much reduced and my speed brought upto what it should be 7.6megs.

Ive just checked my stats and it shows that im on Interleaved.
