I assumed from heid's post that if people didn't like the U2311's AG coating, the Iiyama (Better? :P) was glossy. I can see now how that might have been a mistake.

Ooooouch... probably should have checked the specs a bit more thoroughly (read: at all) on that one. Sorry guys.

And you're right; that is impressive! I wonder what 1024x768 would look like on a 43" screen... I'd love to get a NES emulator going on one of those.

Pretty much all budget Plasmas have this panel res.

Whether it appears too low res depends on the screen size and viewing distance.

    http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2006/12/resolution_chart.jpg

That's calculated based on the actual resolving power of the human eye. It'll be +/- depending on your eyesight but it gives you a rough idea.

You need to be about 5 feet away from a 40" set to get the full benefit of 1080p, that's where the difference will be very perceivable. From a normal viewing distance of about 10 feet there's little/no difference between 720p and 1080p at that screen size.

Res is pretty low on the list of what makes a good TV. Other things like black levels, pixel response, colour depth etc are more important.

I hope I'm in the right thread here:confused:
I need help finding a low cost external hdd, anything >= 1TB.
I had a look around town and strangely enough Maplin seemed to have the most reasonably priced one I could find, around €90 for a 1TB

    anyone seen anything better?

    thanks in advance.

Ah, I see. I've seen a good few people complain about the anti-glare on those. It's hard to tell from photos but it doesn't look so bad. A glossy screen would be much worse (IMO). I bought the U2312HM anyway because I got tired of waiting for the reviews on the Iiyama.

There's a Buffalo 1TB on dabs for about €70. You can get free delivery if you order over something like 80 or 90 euro.
    http://www.dabs.ie/products/buffalo-juststore-desktop-hard-drive---1-tb---hi-speed-usb-5JX2.html?src=3
If I recall correctly, Buffalo just use various other manufacturers in their cases, so you could end up with something good or just medicore. Given the huge shortage of HDDs at the moment, you nearly have to take what you get. Keep your eye out for internal drives as you can get better features (USB 3/eSATA connections) if you get your own enclosure. External drives seem to be cheaper now though as demand seems to be focused on the internal drives and a lot of people are taking the drives out of enclosures rather than putting them in!

Yeah, I couldn't stand a glossy screen. I will admit that it allows for much nicer - while maybe not as accurate - colours, but it's a bloody pain to use in anything but exactly the right lighting conditions.

If its any help, Easons are still selling 2TB external drives for €89. Strip the drive out and use it in your machine. Its hard to know what kind of standard or quality these are but its about the cheapest option I've seen lately.

Given that this is in the PC B&U forum though, it should be pointed out that if you are hooking your PC up to it too, you most definitely will notice the difference.

I was planning to get the A-DATA 650W power supply off komplett for €70 but now its gone up to €90

Is this still the best price for a decent modular PSU when you factor in shipping?

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,710 ✭✭✭Monotype

Wow, and to think it started at €59.
Sometimes the Antec truepower new can go down, but looking at free delivery, only the 550W is in stock at amazon. Most of the modular ones are €100+. On amazon, there's the Corsair 650TXM for around the €100 and the XFX 750W, which is a pretty decent one for €112.

There's the XFX 650W is €82 on dabs.
    http://www.dabs.ie/products/xfx-650w-black-edition-single-rail-semi-modular-psu-7TCZ.html?q=650w&src=16
I think their free postage kicks in at about 90 or 95 so you'd have to buy a bit more from them to get it.

Just having a look around dabs...
The reviews of OCZ's ZT series are pretty good.
    http://www.dabs.ie/products/ocz-technology-650w-zt-series-fully-modular-power-supply-7TM0.html?src=3

Also, the 750W XFX PSU is there for €99.83 delivered.
    http://www.dabs.ie/products/xfx-750w-black-edition-single-rail-semi-modular-psu-7TD0.html?src=3
    It's a silver rated efficiency.

Just tested it there. Looks like it's €90.50.

Really wanted it for the quietness - I doubt there are any good ones out there for 80 euros that are

    Super quiet
    Super efficent
    Modular

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,710 ✭✭✭Monotype

What they have on their site does not match up in practice.

    185062.png

Edit: I suppose they don't specifically say that the postage is free above that €75, just that it's that price below.

Well then I'd call them. Thats the quoted price for delivery.

(unless of course maybe that's without VAT?)

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,710 ✭✭✭Monotype

Yeah, VAT would make more sense.
    75 x 1.21 = 90.75.

I think stuff is getting a bit off topic here so sorry for the divergence. I won't say any more about it here.

    OCZ ModXstream Pro 700W €73.66

I wouldn't go for that modxstream pro. [H] gave them a fail.
    http://www.hardocp.com/article/2008/11/12/ocz_700w_modxstream_pro_power_supply/9

The XFX 750W had very good reviews in noise. That and the 850W version are a fair cut above their 650W version and their Core Edition lines.
Of course, 750W might be well above your needs (was it you that had a 5770 and Q6600 or something?...)

Super efficient ones that are lower wattage are hard enough to find. Superflower sell a platinum modular 550W for €120 or so but you'd need to get it from Germany and postage would be €30 unless you got with somebody else's order.

    Yep, thats me!
Was trying to avoid paying over 50 euro, but now it looks like 100 euro, so will probably go for the 700 watt Cooler master silent pro

    *cough*scam*cough*

Contrary to what OCZ claims, that unit is NOT a PCP+C one. Its goddamn Sirtec/Sirfa like the other ModX units and the latest generation of them are infamous for DIRE caps like the (very) old Antec CWTs. Avoid like the plague.

Decent reviews on any site I've seen. Have you seen any fail? The poster was looking for a 700W unit, modular, quiet, and under €80. That fits the bill.

Its certianly not an amazing PSU, to to state 'avoid like the plague' screams of scaremongering because you read a story where one failed on someone.

[H] updated it, as they'd tested it for 50 degrees, when the unit is only rated for 40.

    http://www.hardocp.com/article/2009/03/03/ocz_modxstream_pro_700w_40c_update/

I was going to post a Super FLower form HWVS, until I realised he wasn't actually ordering stuff from them, making it a horribly over-priced buy.

Saying that, OP says he'll go for the Cooler Master Silent Pro - which really is a quality unit.

I wasn't even aware they were shipping over here...

They don't. He'd have to order through a parcel forwarding service - who will probably charge commission of some sort - and then pay for shipping, and then pay import tax when it gets here, meaning:

    €130 PSU + €10 commission + €50 shipping + €50 import taxes = €240

For a decent 850W unit. Bargain indeed!
