Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Howdy all,

I was in PC world today for a wander and i came across this for a ridiculously low price so without thinking i bought it.

But i have no idea whether my PSU will be suitable as it is a Dell Inspiron 530 and can't seem to find any concrete info on PSU in the manual.

So can i use this graphics card in my computer?

If not, what price can i get selling it on (unused, with a receipt from today)

What price? PcWorld aren't renowned for their bargain prices?
What psu have You? 4870 are fairly power hungry and need 2x 6pin pcie power connectors. 450W plus I reckon
Is there room,? the 4870 is fairly big, I think nearly 9 inches, will the case take a full size card?

I doubt there's a hope in hell of keeping it stable in a Inspiron 530. Those things eat electricity (130-150W under load) and spew out tons of heat in return, and the 530 only has a 300W PSU.

Shite, not much of a bargain then seeing as i can't use it

    Got it for €49.97

The 4870 has 2 6-pins right? I'm sorry, but there's no chance of getting that working with your PSU. :(

Try returning it if it isn't opened?

It was the only thing i saw on clearance, just couldn't leave it behind me at that price, even though i have no need for it now :(

Any idea how much i would get for it?

Was half thinking about getting a new psu to use it, but have a 4670 and don't think there would be much if any difference when using a 1366x768 hd ready tv as a monitor

Hmm... it depends on the rest of your setup but you'd need at least a CX400 to run it, and that's assuming you have a low-ish-power rig and have a Molex>PCIe adaptor handy :o Crysis would probably like it :D But most games would only get a slight boost at 720p+

tbh getting a PSU for a dell that works and power it more is a hassle but in the case of a 4870 its worth it. the single greatest graphics EVER!!!

Btw evil moderator :D back in the days before the stupid adverts.ie people like me would leech parts of the upgraders here, seriously most of pcs were builts from buying parts on here. The stupid adverts.ie killed that :( There was a group of us we had no issue being called leeches :)

You could get at least 100 for it on adverts

Or sell it on ebay for 120 delivered

Right, beginning to rethink here and am considering getting a PSU if i can get one for cheap.

Anybody have any opinions as to the suitability of these below, whether they would suit my needs?

What other kit do you have in that machine?

Both those PSUs would do, but they're both pretty mediocre, ageing units. The TruePower is cheaper but still overpriced. Did I tell you that they violently explode and kill attached hardware? Avoid v1/v2.0 TruePowers!

The OCZ is fair but €50 for it second-hand is ludicrous - I sometimes see them cheaper new!

Nothing much, it is all fairly standard, an E6550, 2 gig of ram, dvd drive, 1 hard drive...oh and a HD4670

ANy idea where best to source a cheap one, which isn't liable to leave me like Fr. Bigley!

Edit: This appears to have two PCI-E connectors, but is only 430w. Any body have any experience with this brand/model (Seasonic)?

Seasonic is a very good brand, Google a few of their psu's and read the reviews,They always do well.
My brother is running a 4870 with a 400w psu and has never had a bit of bother, So I'd say 430 should be fine.
I don't think you can go far wrong for that money and you can collect for free, Happy days.

Nope, it only has one 6pin. Similar spec to Corsair CX400 (right down to 30A on the 12V rail) but better stability and efficiency. Its a possibility although I'm a little more comfortable putting high-TDP GPUs on PSUs with over 35A on the 12V rail.

Are you sure I thought it has one 6 pin pci-e and one 6/8 pin pci-e.
Have a look here and here or do I have the wrong psu?

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 18,377 Mod ✭✭✭✭Solitaire

Nope, different sources are contradicting each other. Most review sites say it has one 6pin, but Komplett says it has one 6pin and one 8pin. I checked Seasonic and they claim it has two 6pin and no 8pin. And yes, it was the S12 II 430GB in each case. Confused? I sure am! :o

Still, if you can't find a better deal go for it. Odds are it'll have enough connections and while 30A is a bit tight you only have a basic rig with a 65W CPU so it should be fairly efficient.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,376 ✭✭✭54kroc

Did you look at the seasonic link in my post? It says it has one of each, but either way does it matter as there are two molex to pci-e cables in the box with his gpu.
I have used these in other peoples pc's and everything seemed fine.

Here's a good review of the psu.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 18,377 Mod ✭✭✭✭Solitaire

That's one of the sources that claims it only has the one 6pin! :o

I'd take Seasonic's word over theirs. Then again since the review there could have been a minor revision that shoehorned in another PCIe cable of course! ;)

Thanks for all your input guys, it i s appreciated!

It always helps to be informed! I'll do a bit more looking at this myself before i decide anything. Just to add to the confusion around the seasonic though, on kompletts webiste is this...
    Power Output Connectors Details
1 x power 24 pin ATX with detachable 4 pin section
    1 x power 8 pin +12V
    9 x 4 PIN internal power
    6 x 15 pin Serial ATA power
    2 x 4 PIN mini-power connector
    1 x 6 pin PCI Express power
    1 x 8 pin PCI Express power

If only this wasn't my first time ever looking at Power Supplies:o

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 18,377 Mod ✭✭✭✭Solitaire

Don't sweat it :) The CX400 is a regular pick here and it's not as good as the Seasonic and can be absolutely certain of not having a second PCIe connector! :o The S12 II 430GB is a good PSU and the best pick unless you can find an unbelievable eleventh-hour deal out there! :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,890 ✭✭✭Effluo

I'm just thinking that maybe the op shouldn't bother using the 4870 at all!

He has a 4670 and that's a pretty capable gpu at lower resolutions,

Are you finding it difficult to play some games or something?

Sometimes that means 1 x 6 pin PCI Express power, with 1 x 6-to-8 Pin Adapter.

I think someone should buy one to find out.
I think it has 1 6pin and 1 8pin that you can split two pins off.

    On Seasonics site,it lists 1x6Pin and an 8Pin (For motherboard power,not the PCI-E 8Pin)

I think it may be possible that Komplett mixed the 8 Pin up in their description, although I doubt this

    i blame Solitaire :p

Seriosuly only certain type PSUs work in Dells, fairly sure most normal ones dont.

Altho Dell say they dont use proprietary motherboards anymore, they really do.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 18,377 Mod ✭✭✭✭Solitaire

That comment is only several years too late :P

Dell have been using standard ATX PSUs for years. ATX mobos, not so long :o

And of course Dell use proprietary OEM mobos in thier systems, but so long as they conform to ATX (not flippin' BTX!!) specifications that's fine.

bro has an Optiplex 740 that wouldnt accept anything other than one of a website that i cant find anymore:(

Normal Atx dont work in them (i tried 3 ) Could have just been the optiplex but Dell really dont what you to upgrade for obvious reason. And the 740 is a recentish model.

hey if it doesnt work out im a winner here :D but before you buy anything make sure it works in a dell.

    530 maybe a winner

Dell switched the business-oriented Opteron line back to proprietary PSUs a while back for some retarded reason. Not sure if the wiring is different, its just they're not the same dimensions as ATX units. I was really talking about the consumer-oriented Inspiron line that most home users have.

I am sure ye have been on hte edge of yer seats... it has 1 6 pin PCI-E connector.

Unfortunately though i think i am going to have to return it. Powered everything up fine but there is a fierce noise off of it (i attached sample, that was just me powering on and off, strange ticking noise), like the PS fan is catching something.

i'll see tomorrow if there is something noticeable when i look at t in better light

Edit: Yeah discovered why the file wasn't working, copying and pasting into to word gives and image, not the actual file:o

Apologies to the 3 people who looked at it! Its working now!
