If specialist dispensaries with the requisite medical / social checks and balances in place were allowed to prescribe opiates, death from impurities in heroin and drug related crime by users would not occur in anywhere near the present numbers.

A lifting of prohibition on certain narcotics should be trialled to allow for a considered medical, academic, sociological and economic appraisal of such a scheme.

Anybody that wants it can get free class A drugs from a licensed clinic as long as they register themselves as a state drug addict.

Drug dealers and other vicious criminals have to seek alternative employment.

what casual drug user is going to register with the state as an addict just to try out a class A drug?

    Enter the Dealer.
    good post though.

Meh, i glanced through it, saw the words heroin and legal. Then i thought of Dublin and nope, no good can come of this.

Out of interest how many heroin junkies do you think there are in Dublin?

    I am really curious.

i believe there is upwards of 20,000 people daily consuming opiates in the Dublin area - mainly legally obtained methadone - 15,000

thats a lot of people - so they can't all be tarnished with "junky" tag , what may come as a surprise - many are law abiding regular citizens, who need something extra to get by, in the crazy Ireland of today

So you're for the legalisation of Heroin then? If any drug should be legalised, it should certainly not be heroin.

Safe injecting clinics (like this place: http://supervisedinjection.vch.ca/ ) would be a good start, doubt we'll ever see the day where heroin (or any other illicit substance) is legalized here. Methadone addiction is already state sponsored so I don't get how legalizing heroin could be any worse as methadone obviously isn't solving the problem.

I would have free heroin handed out to addicts for starters. Reduce the need for them to go out and mug some old ladies for cash. No point in prosecuting for small possession, doesn't achieve much.

I'm a chocoholic. I can't get enough of it. I get these deep yearning for chocolate during the day and I just can't help myself, it's ruining my life and my health. I'm going broke because of it.

I went to Chocolate Addicts Anonymous (CAA) but that was no help. I even went to rehab for chocoholics when things got really bad. That didn't help either as I was able to get my hands on chocolate too easy afterward and things just started to spiral out of control again. Chocolate has effected me and people around me.

I am in my present state simple because chocolate is so freely available in shops and even in vending machines on the street. The Irish government must make the sale of chocolate illegal; it ruins peoples lives. I say this because I know the damage chocolate did to my life.

    Ban Chocolate,
    Save Lives!

Firstly, I’m not a drug addict or user of any drug legal or otherwise. Alcohol, yes, though I’m not a huge fan of it.

    So, why?

I, like most people, would never have imagined myself saying such ‘heresy’. However, I’ve changed my mind after reading a very eye-opening article by Nick Davis, a writer at the Guardian newspaper. Davis is one of the most respected investigative journalists in the UK and was winner of UK Journalist of the Year some years back.

The article itself, there’s a few of them, was originally published back in 2001 to accompany a documentary on Channel 4, Drugs – The Phoney War.

Needless to say, it caused quite a response

    Have a read:

    Jesus wept

As with gambling, alcohol, tobacco and other legal substances.

Doesn't that just mean they are mugging us legally so to speak.
