I hate you. Also 230 looked low enough to me at least, another inch or two probably wouldn't hurt to make it safe but seemed to be parallel. Nice you. bastard. ;)

    Thanks Brian.:D

Comments like that aren't helpful to someone who's going up against international judges at a world championship level event.

He needs at least 3 inches, probably more, to be safe. It's not close to parallel to be perfectly honest. To be sure of getting it, he needs to get the crease at his hip to where Joe's shorts stop. Even then if you get some cnut of a judge, which isn't unusual, it could go either way.

Looking strong tho dude. you cnut :D

Yeah, that's what i was thinking too after watching it; I could definitely do with 2-3 inches.

Hanley comments like that were not offered as on par with an international judge or to be taken as the last word on squat depth in any way, and should not be implied that they are in some way apologetic or mollycoddling someone who clearly squats much more than me and has actual experience in competition, versus the obvious 'well done' note that it was.

You can't say he looks low enough and then back track and say you didnt mean in a competition sense....

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,165 ✭✭✭✭brianthebard

I said he appeared to be parallel but he needed some more to seal it. I meant it the sense that it looked close to parallel, like it said. However I didn't expect Vis to see my comment and go 'oh brian, who only squats 145 and hasn't competed yet, thinks my squat looks parallel. Well I'll never have to go deeper so'. Do you honestly think I meant it in the way you're making out, or that Vis would take it up that way?

Everyone wants to think their squats are in. I've no doubt about his ability for self examination, he's proved that ability from the results he's gotten. But if you think you're there or thereabouts, and have someone reinforce that, it's only natural to think "maybe I was in".

I've been around too many lifters who've missed squats in competition because they had people telling me they were close or there when they weren't. Dude's busted his ass training for a f*cking world championships and he's in a great place to do SERIOUS damage. You'll have to excuse me if that was a bit blunt, but I didn't want there to be any doubt about them not being good enough.**

And anyway, it still wasn't parallel :D

**Vis, i REALLY hope you get what I'm saying here. I'm sick watching the progress you made and I'm not giving out about form, strength or whatever, just when it comes to the standard expected at comp, esp internationally, the depth is gonna have to be better. Best thing you can do at internationals is absolutely bury your open so they don't look too closely at the second and third. They'll still burn you on borderline calls, but they won't be looking for reasons to fail you on depth if your first was solid, if that makes sense.

Fair enough that's a better explanation of what you were saying, I can see you were just trying to make sure he buries his opener and doesn't miss out on a big opportunity.

I got a deadlift PB today at the gym, you just took a sh1t on it :(

but seriously, amazing job won't be long till you have that from the floor :D:)

Easy question I'm sure but does 16" deadlifts mean you're moving the bar 16" from its dead position or that the bar's dead position is 16" off the floor?
