flue relining

    I live in an old house about 100 yrs old. just removed old gas fire with the hope of having an open fire, but there seems to be no flue lining or fire back. due to the age of house it may have been built without linings. can i light a fire with no linings. i have a fireback ready to install. any ideas guys???
