    hi guys,

Im trying to setup a mail exchange in windows server 2003.
Also have windows server 2008, but not quite upgraded just yet.

Our emails are currently going through a company in the uk.

I want to setup a mail program that will auto check the mails every few mins, and let 3 staff member's access the mails from their laptops through a vpn.

ive looked at microsoft exchange, and i just cant see myself dropping several hundred euro to buy it.

can anyone suggest a cheaper / FREE alternative that i could use?

dont need calendar's, phone book etc. I just want them to be able to check their mails.

    thanks for any help!

I think this is better suited to S&S than C&T.

To save setting up a new topic, what would be a good mail server for Linux ?

http://www.sendmail.org/ and http://www.postfix.org/ would be the two main ones.

when you say your mails go via a co in the UK, are the mails directed to their servers at present? do they provide you with option for POP access? if so you could just use outlook on the PC's and a PST on the server for each user

Excuse me jumping in. I was thinking of putting zimbra on a new win 7 machine. You think its good? Open source means no spyware doesn't it?

tbh if the OP has to ask about mail software then go for MDaemon

the free stuff isn't as easy to configure , with MDaemon disaster recovery is spending 20 minutes installing another copy on a workstation,

Don't forget that exchange does lots of things, only one of which is email,

SmarterMail is an excellent alternative to Exchange Server. We use it on a lot of our servers and it works great.

Have you considered Google Apps? It's an excellent platform - easy to use for both users and admin, and has some useful fetaures buolt in such as the spam filter & virus scanning

The free version is at: http://www.google.com/apps/intl/en/group/index.html

    Zimbra is really quite good.

google apps, if you have no data protection issues.
