THIS is a sports bar. The closest we've had was up there by teds at one stage. many many many tvs showing many different sports, all the time. not just gaa rugby and soccer, you want usa sports, horse racing, athletics, ufc, boxing, etc etc.

Thats just a stereotypical american sports bar.

A bar doesn't have to be big and flashy to be considered a sports bar.

Pretty sure the still house shows horse racing, boxing and US sports some of the time, due to the time difference it couldn't do it regularly and the same goes for showing UFC and some boxing, a lot of those would be on when the bar is closed. Some of those big flashy bars can show too much sports at one time. No point in having 20 tvs with 20 different things on just so it can seem more like a stereotypical sports bar.

why not have tvs showing different things? why not show UFC the next day after it airs, on loop?

Theres sports beyond prem league. Its so hard to find Serie A on tv in Limerick for example, or nba, or nfl, etc etc.

PS, that bar is in Canada ;)

Ah Zuroph, you have me pining for Canada again, $10 unlimited wings for Sports Night Mondays at the local bar... :o

Haven't been in the still house during the day but they might do this.

Very possible they do show Serie A, if a game is on they would be the most likely place to have a channel that shows it.

The same could be said for the likes of the sports bar in your example in Canada. I wouldn't think they show Rugby, GAA, Rugby League and quiet possibly La Liga, Serie A etc.... They would mainly show NHL, NFL, NBA, Boxing, UFC, NASCAR and some Premier League Football. They cater for the popular sports in their country (or the ones most likely to get a decent crowd in) just like the sports bars do in Ireland. One can not be considered anymore a sports bar than the other because it has more tvs or fits more into the typical look of one.

All the TV's in that picture, they are showing 2 different sports, Curling and Basketball. No thanks, i think id prefer the Still House.

The ESPN Zone on Times Sq in NYC is a different story though, ive just read its shut down :(

Teds had no more a sports bar than the still house. Some sports stuff on the walls and they certainly did not show an array of sport. Anyway the sports bar was in the George before that and was equally not a "sports Bar" as some people seem to think one would be.

Look guys 99% of pubs can call themselves sports bars as they all show sport there's no specialised sports bars like d states in Ireland and probably won't be. The states have a bigger range of sports than we do in Europe. Anyway give me a band any day

No it's the pub on Wickham street. It's the pub that faces down Thomas Street.

Heard Reilly's in Westbury is closed too.

Spur restaurant is gone in the crescent. Gutted. Loved their ribs. There's an Italian restaurant opening in the same place soon.

Any idea what pubs they are?

Could it be the reason behind the BE, O'Donnells and that pub in Corbally closing last week?

Good to see your delighted about more people losing their jobs and even more empty buildings around town. Does the fact that the pubs are charging these prices in the first place and still struggling not indicate to you that it's not as straight forward as it seems. Pubs have to pay a lot more for their drink than off licences. Plus when super markets are selling boxes of beer dirt cheap it's usually selling below cost. Pubs face huge overheads - apart from nancys I cannot imagine too many pubs in limerick making a profit

I agree with this poster. Alot of the high prices (leaving out the ridiculous prices in Dublin) are down to tax and duty imposed by the Government. For example, if we had the same excise duty on beer that Spain do, an average pub in Limerick could sell a pint of Heineken for almost 2 euro cheaper, and still make the same profit margin!

As regards offlicenses, the Government were trying to discourage young people from drinking so closed offlicenses early. This was a disaster for alot of Limerick pubs and resulted in their offlicense revenue dropping as much as 60%. Whether young people are drinking less is debable as the supermarkets are doing a great trade. And while technically below cost selling is illegal, the supermarkets have huge lines of credit and often get rebates months down the road, with the net result they are selling below cost anyway. A supermarket can generally sell a bottle of whiskey cheaper then a publican can buy it!! Some publicans in Limerick are actually buying alcohol from supermarkets. Something isn't right.

Pubs pay the same for drink as an Off License however a Pub will actually pay less in the long term because they have a thing called LTA with their suppliers(mostly) and stand to sell more alcohol over 12 months than an Off License.

This means as long as they buy everything from one company(lets say Gleesons) they get a rebate at the end of the year. An Off License will likely look for anything from 20% margin and up but most pubs look for a 50% and up of a margin. They both pay the same VAT etc as each other but pubs feel the raw end because they want such high returns.

Supermarkets then buy is MAHOOSIVE quantities and sell for, sometimes below 0% profit, just to get you into the store. Simply, when they can no longer force the supplier to continue that price they just stop stocking it. False economy as a customer really.

Yeah, I remember they added a few euro onto their basic burger offering. Something crazy like 13.95 for a bacon and cheese burger with chips and onions. Stopped going there around then. I never understood how they expected business in a recession by putting up their prices!! As regards the Steak challenge I did it a few years ago and they paid the bill. Friends have done it also and some have passed the challenge. Think it was a 60oz steak cut in 2 pieces as they had to cook each seperately. Was fairly lousy meat though, rump I think, with lots of grizzle on the edges. Your jaws got sore before you got full up

    @Flaccus.
They must have been when there was some promo or gimmick was on.Anytime I went there it was a different excuse..Manager not on,no steaks that size.[.Oh plueezee a steak house with no steak!!!:rolleyes:],chef too busy, must book beforehand, blah, blah, blah.Final time I went there the service was appaling ,the food was crud, cold and expensive..No wonder they went tits up!!
Well surprise,I sure wasnt expecting that they would feed anyone a decent bit of sirlion on a challange. But a nice T bone would have been cool.
Did one of these challanges in the US,and OMG!!They dont bring a steak, they bring a full COW on a plate that has had its arse wiped, and hooves and horns removed!! Cooked the way you want it too!!!:eek:
