Pity, I use them a bit. Where else is good for cheap diesel?

What is an eye opener is the length of the line outside the dole office every Wednesday (and I assume on other sign on days), which stretches from the front door to around the corner from the building. The line can still be going around the corner from the building 15 minutes after the doors have opened.

Just a scary amount of people going in there, many of whom would love to work but are having no luck at all getting work, probably due to the huge number that are unemployed in Limerick that apply for any job they see going.

The last set of figures I saw was for almost 23,000 unemployed in Limerick city and county and with around 13,000 of those being in the city limits. That is just a frightening number for a place as small as Limerick.

I think the population within the city limits is around the 55,000 mark, so having 13,000 unemployed gives Limerick city an unemployment % of almost 24%, which is miles above the national average.

Bear in mind that not all those people were working when times were good. We still had high unemployed in Limerick during the boom times but this unemployment was voluntary unemployment.

True but when you combine that "element" with the recent massive rise in unemployment figures it makes for a devastating effect on the local economy.

I think that Limerick is distinct from the rest of the country. We are in a depression while the rest of the country is in a recession. It is frightening and once more it looks like Limerick is being ignored by our Government.

The people of Limerick need to take to the streets and make their voices heard.

The unemployment figure for Limerick city in terms of the % of the city population unemployed before the economy went belly up was almost 11% if memory serves.

Which was still way above the national level at that time, but the circa 24% it is at now is a disgrace to be honest.

Spurs is now an Italian Restaurant

Spar in ballycummin is still open, well it was a few days ago

Isn't Benetton now in Cruises St where the ELC use to be

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,912 ✭✭✭kilburn

I think the whole one shop has closed and another has opened in its place is a bit stupid keep that to the business opening thread or we will be here all day. Cannocks closed but is now called pennys under new management. Same for Roches Stores under new management and called Debenhams. Capiche

I could have sworn that Benetton closed down as well. It never even had any signs up outside.

A wider problem with that is that I've lived in Limerick all my life and this thread is the first time I've heard of this "Baileys" place on Parnell Street.

It was the furniture place near the credit Union. Pretty sure it was there for a few decades.:)
