Let,s not take ourselves too seriously here folks. Both of the following quotes were written by the same person.

    And from http://phoenixtriclub.com/blogs/tunney/

I've signed up for it at any rate, a few of my friends are going for the guerilla style option and a few are going the paid route. I know that I am entitled to just go out and cycle the route any day I like (entitled, but not actually able :) ), but having never done it before, it's one that I'd like to tick off officially.

I'm not overly concerned about the money, it is expensive, but it's not prohibitive for me. I am sure there are better value (and better organised) on during the year, and with any luck I'll get to do them too at some point. Although, going from the comments on this thread, I might have to throw an ol' sandwich into the jersey or something. Maybe the saddle bag. Warm sandwiches don't really appeal. Is it possible to get sandwich sized panniers?

There are plenty of towns with shops on the route, it is hilly enough that I would not recommend carrying any more than is necessary. Bring a reasonable amount of compact food (Clif Bars, that sort of thing.)

I'll take it. How much are you looking for?

Lumen. I am deeply suspicious ofyour holiday timing. I think you planned this deliberately to avoid the Ww200 and the entire foldy bike things is an elaborate ruse on your behalf.
I mean who is going to drive me to the start now?

How ever much you want to donate to whatever charity floats your boat.

I can't remember whether I've received all the entry paperwork yet. Have they sent them out? (edit: that question not directed at you billyhead)

    *might not be actually true*

People do do the w200 on hybrids, and that boardman looks up to the task. You'll be at a disadvantage to those on road bikes, but sure it's not a race.

Do your best not to crash into anyone though, ay, apparently that's a strong impulse among inexperienced riders on the day.

    I jest.

The bike will get you around, no problem. Have seen them in Halfords and they look great. Maybe put 25mm tyres on as the standard tyres get mixed reviews.. All you need do is concentrate on getting the miles in your legs. Best of luck. Not sure about the Tour of Louth.

+1, after persuading the missus to get the alu version of this on the bike2work, my hard work was nearly undone by the constant series of subsequent punctures on the stock tyres. 2 gatorskins later - not a bother.

    Hi,
Thanks for the info would the gearing on a hybrid not be easier for climbing the hills compared to a racer?
And is it a simple matter of changing the 28cc tyres for 25 cc.
    Thanks Mike

    Generally speaking, yes.

    Depends on width of rim.

Incidentally, Tour of Louth is Sunday, 27th June.

Mike, if you think the Tour of Louth will be an easy introduction to the world of sportives you are badly mistaken. Fastest pace on anything I did last year, it was a hammerfest. 100km in 3h02m and that included stopping for food in the middle. 36km/h moving average with the last hour at 39km/h! In fairness I guess it is possible to do it slower. There are lots of other options shorter than Wicklow though, the Wicklow 100 on the same day, the Tour de Foothills, Martin Early Tour of Kildare, etc.

Reading back over that thread reminds me of why my life is now full of bikes. Awesome fun. :)

    Folks,

I don't like dragging up old information but could you give me an unbiased opinion is the Wicklow 200 worth registering for. I keep hearing conflicting reports about whether or not its worth 50 yo yos

I do the 200 most years : really only for the sake of feeling like I can still cycle at a reasonable level.

With regard to the charity aspect : in the old days, IVCA used to designate a charity (Irish Hospice Society, Crumlin Hospital).
I don't think any of the subscription went to these charities but they were given prominence in the race and I managed to raise sponsorship money for them from friends/family/work colleagues.
