I've a old Carina that im parting out and seen this advertised : http://www.driving.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=201008197012355

How would it go if i put the 4a-fe 1600 out of the Carina and into the Avensis. Without even phoning the chap i'd hazzard a good guess that the engine ran dry of oil and seized.

I'm not too familar with the Toyota range but familar with engine swaps from Classic Cars, but the biggest headache (assuming that you managed to get the engine bolted in and bolted to the 'box) would be wiring up the fuel injection.

You may be lucky and swap the ECU (and keys for immobiliser) but making the car's original ECU work with the older engine might be interesting, especially getting it fueling right.

I'm hoping that the block is the same for both. If not, you'll have to get custom mounts made.

I'd say the mounts would be different. That 03 would have had the vvti engine. They're completely different to the Carina engine. Might be worth pricing an engine for it though.

It'd be a shame to scrap the carina!
