I have an 02 Golf GTI with a ceased engine. It needs a short block according to a main dealer who looked at it. But another poster has told me it could be repaired, that alot of mechanics are just lazy and would rather out in a new bottom end/short block.

Briefly, the other poster said the shaft could be taken out and looked at as it might still be repairable (machineable) and therefore fixable...?

Could anyone reccommend a good mechanic/engine specialist who could do this work?

Where are you? In Waterford you could try O'Leary & Byrne Engine Rebuilding & ReconditioningTelephone Number: 051-841941 Park Road Waterford. I know nothing about them myself.

+1 for HPMP, we send all our cylinder head work their way(albeit they are local to me).

o leary and byrne closed down around 6 years ago! Youd pay more getting the engine stripped to get crankshaft etc re done and block checked than you would for a short block so its not that mechanics are lazy! Short block is the cheaper way out and less hassle and time for everyone:)

Miss Daisy, you must have another thread on this subject. good engines can be found for this car for under 1000 euro. My nephew who knows about such things says the engine you but must be compatable with the car. this involves gtting a three digit code off the engine, perhaps on the timing cover ,not sure.

do not buy an engine with a different number/code.

breakers may well tell you it will do, so be careful.

. What colour is the car, how much do you think it is worth?, then calculate the cost of repairing.

Yup second that, if Abbeyleix is not too far to travel then contact Geo on vagdrivers, he's a VW nut and his family (George Daggs) have a garage on the old Cork rd near Abbeyleix.
