The authorities have agreed to share vehicle registration details to ensure offenders can be pursued more easily through the courts.
The Department of Transport already has measures in place with the Driver and Vehicle Agency (DVA) in the north to swap information on motor tax and abandoned vehicles.
Transport Minister Noel Dempsey said: "It is an indication of the close levels of co-operation on this project between our colleagues in the Department for Transport, DVLA (Driver Vehicle Licensing Agency) and authorities in the north, that we have successfully overcome potential difficulties regarding data privacy and security issues in the pursuit of cross-border traffic offenders.
"This is another important step in road safety and traffic enforcement and one that we are all strongly committed to."
The pilot scheme runs until next November.

It was only a matter of time before this happened. How well it works now is anyone's guess. Hopefully it will be as efficient as everything else in this country.

Would be interesting how this transfer of personal information from one EU State to another will hold up in a court of law

It it was just our esteemed legislators writing it, we'd probably be looking at another penalty point debacle in five years time.

No problem whatsoever, the EU has a framework for such things. This is very much needed in Ireland as elsewhere as EU provisions for the free movement of people should not allow them ignore the law when they travel.

The likes of Dundalk have been chasing parking tickets from NI cars for years under these EU arrangements, this new thing just makes it more straightforward.
