Yeah Fireball I reckon if we are to get to a quarter final obviously the best route would be to win Munster but the second best route I feel would be lose to Kerry and go through the longer route of the qualifiers and try and get a few wins under our belt (obviously we could get a rotten draw and get knocked out) rather than lose to Cork in a Munster final and try and beat a team in the fourth round with a bit of form after having lost another Munster final.

Yeah, can't see us beating both Cork and Kerry. If we get knocked out in the semi-finals, we'd have a good chance against pretty much any of the qualifiers. Down would be expected to beat us and Tyrone/Monaghan but we'd be very unlucky to draw one of them. If we can build up a bit of momentum, it wouldn't be impossible to beat a provincial finalist like Roscommon/Sligo/Wexford.

And since we could be going in as semi final loser we go into the 2nd round of the qualifiers so they could draw each other ha.

However more than likely we will have a long layoff considering Leinster haven't even played their quarters yet.

I'd be confident of taking Down if we got them in Limerick. In fact I'd be confident of taking any team at home. I think they got very lucky last year drawing a Sligo team in the 4th round when they were never going to win and Kerry having a goal disallowed in the quarters and Down having a square ball allowed in the semi. They did run Cork close in fairness to them though.

Anyway lets hope the lads aren't talking about the qualifiers like us:D

Yeah and we drew with Cork in normal time. But we haven't been very lucky with qualifier draws...ever, really.

I doubt they are talking about it, and hopefully we won't be there.

Just wondering are their any teams out there that would be interested in a Junior hurling challenge the weekend of the Waterford/Limerick game in Thurles. We are a club within 7 miles of Thurles and maybe might be some teams out there who would be interested. Anyone interested send me a PM.

Everyone is saying Limerick have zero chance tonight without John Galvin and Lucey, but i think we have every chance. Guys tend to raise their games when key players are missing, and because we wont be relying on one individual tonight we can expect to see more of a team performance. I'm very hopeful that Lavin, Collins and McCarthy can step up to the plate. I would think we can see another good performance from Tom Lee at midfield. Any player who can get the better of Louth's Paddy Keenan is worth his place. As per usual the winning/losing of the game will be Limerick's ability to convert their scores. We never seem to have problems creating chances but taking them is a different story.

I'm glad Tomás O Sé is not lining out tonight. The game will be a better spectacle with less on-field cynicism.

    3 things:

    1. John Galvin has carried Limerick for ten years and without him we are rudderless

    2. Stephen Lucey is the only man that is capable of marking Kieran Donaghy.

    3. Having Shane Gallagher stand 6 yards off Donaghy all night is probably not a good idea.

A bad night for Limerick footballers. They've been savage unlucky with injuries all the year and missing John Galvin and Stephen Lucey tonight were huge losses. The referee tonight has been bad for both sides,no common sense used by him throughout the game.

Another joke decision by the ref! At least a 3rd goal for Limerick, question marks remain over the Kerry defence.

Rory is having a shocker tonight in fairness to him

I would still expect Limerick to be a handful for anyone in the qualifiers - best to forget most aspects from tonights game.

He's had far better performances, but he was consistent if nothing else :)

Still so disappointed after yesterday and was a defeat that hurt more than most I can tell ya. That game was there to be won and we let it slip. I'm conscious of placing too much faith in the young lads too early like we did with Shaughs when he first made the break through but Downes has the potential to be one of our most prolific forwards of modern times.

Just a few thoughts on yesterdays game.

    1) Management were slow to make changes yesterday. I think Reale should have been taken off earlier to be honest. Our full back line conceded 3-6 from play yesterday.

    2) Seamus Hickey is a brilliant hurler but he's not a full back. His outfield instincts got the better of him for Walsh's goal when he went to burst out whilst leaving no one in defense and an easy goal for waterford. Thought he didn't help Quaid for the first goal either cutting right across his line of sight before Mullane struck. Full back is a specialist position which is probably one of the hardest places to play on a hurling field. Hickey is a future centre back for Limerick no question about it.

    3) For all the great things Wayne Mac did yesterday he was a bit too loose. His man scored a few points from play but in fairness to him he grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck and dragged us back into the match.

    4) Donal O'grady was very good and another performance like that would do nicely.

    5) I'm sorry but management made one terrible decision yesterday. Moving James Ryan to centre forward was a good switch and Greame Mulcahy did alright when he was moved out to half forward. But what purpose did Richie McCarthy serve in corner forward? He's not a corner forward. Tom O'Brien could have been a good switch there because he has savage pace and could have turned a tired Waterford defense inside out and he could have taken the close in frees and Geary was striking the frees from distance quite well. This was a major oversight I think.

    6) Niall Moran needs to work on his shooting. He got a few nice points but hit some desperately costly wides.

All in all there is cause for optimism but I hope to Christ this isn't another false dawn. We've had our share of them in the past. A good qualifier draw and a quarter final isn't beyond us based on that performance but we need to improve.

A major criticism of Limerick teams of both codes is that too often we lose matches we should win and rarely, if ever, win matches we should lose. I suppose we've waited 15 years for a Munster title. In the words of Johnny Logan, "Whats another Year".

So am I right in saying next up is either Wexford or the losers of the Galway/Dublin match? I suppose Wexford in Pairc na Gael would be the best draw for Limerick on paper?

I'd imagine it will be played on grass, detective ;)

You are indeed correct about the draw possibilities, Limerick will play either Wexford or Dublin/Galway and loosers of Tipp/Clare will play the other.

I'm absolutely sickened, those kind of losses hurt. A lot. Shaughs produced in 2007 and was a great hurler but I think Downes is better...I think he'll be the best forward to play for Limerick since well before I was born. He is dynamite. Top, top class.

    1. I think Richie McCarthy should have been taken off earlier too, he was very poor. I know he was the freetaker but Eoin Ryan could have been brought on too.

    2. I agree. But we don't have an actual full-back and Hickey's more capable than most. I'd definitely prefer to see him out the field.

    3. Well Wayne Mac isn't a half-back really imo...but I can't criticise his performance yesterday, best game in a Limerick shirt from him. I can't believe he scored a goal.

    4. I agree, Dodge is a legend and was superb yesterday. If captaincy was chosen by the leaders of the team rather than club champions, I'd have him as captain.

    5. I thought Graeme Mulcahy was poor yesterday, especially in the first half. Not a positional thing, he was just off-the-pace imo. Agree with the McCarthy thing, I'd love to see Tommy O'Brien play. Hasn't got a fair chance under O'Grady imo.

    6. Very wasteful on some occasions but he did hit 4 great points. Topsy-turvy performance.

Additional point- Breen's point was top top class. Inspirational to say the least.

Is it certain that we can't draw Clare/Tipp so? Wouldn't fancy playing Clare again for some reason. They are due a win over us at some stage. As for the Tipp boys... Wexford at home in theory would be a good draw but we have a bad record in qualifiers that we are expected to win and no team will ever fear Limerick. Just look at the times we played Offaly in them and look at two years ago when we barely got over Laois (although we were in disarray at the time behind the scenes).

A game against Dublin or Galway would be what I'd like to see. At least we'd know where we are in the grand scheme of things anyway. A match against Cork in the next round would be great if we could make it that far!

In 2009, we still beat Laois. And Wexford. And Dublin.

And to be fair to Justin McCarthy, the performances up until the semi-final were quite good. We did get to a semi-final, we were definitely better than all the teams we beat. Tipp were in a different league to us...okay, he got the tactics wrong but Tipp were just better than us anyway. And they still are, I think...if we end up playing them at some stage I can us being beaten well.

I'd prefer the Wexford game to know where we are. They're decent enough...you'd think our full-strength team would be better than theirs. It was 2 yours ago and we've improved since then imo- Downes and Hannon have class, and Sean Tobin, Tom Condon and Graham Mulcahy are all good players + Hickey and O'Mahoney are more experienced now.

Taught ye had the game won lads I was very impressed with the overall display. Both teams had a fair share of young players new to senior championship we must give them a chance. Best of luck for the rest of the season I think you will do very well. Our minors face each other this Saturday, has the makings of a great game. The future looks bright for both counties

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,264 ✭✭✭✭Fireball07

Minor game should be interesting, apparently Brendan O'Connor will be missing though and he's a very good player. It will be tough but they're a talented team. Hopefully they can do it!!

As for the seniors, Reale could be out for the Wexford game. He's a very experienced hurler but was poor the last day, so maybe it's a blessing in disguise?? Bit harsh to say that but David Moloney is a very committed corner-back, good man marker. Full-back is still a problem, maybe Lucey will be there but I'm really not sure about his abilities anymore.

Limerick Minor Hurling Team V Waterford
    1. Pj Hall (Adare)
    2. Shane Irwin (Bruff)
    3. Barry O'Connell (Kildimo)
    4. Brian Murphy (Fedamore)
    5. Liam Ryan (Doon)
    6. Ciaran Keogh (Na Piarsaigh)
    7. Barry Lynch (Feohanagh/Castlemahon)
    8. Dan Morrissey (Ahane)
    9. Diarmuid Dee (Mungret)
    10. David Reidy (Dromin/Athlacca)
    11. Shane Dowling (Na Piarsaigh)
    12. Mark Carmody (Patrickswell)
    13. Kevin O'Brien (Patrickswell)
    14. Mike Fitzgibbon (Feohanagh/Castlemahon)
    15. Jack Aherne (Kileedy)

One change from the team who beat Cork. Brendan O'Connor is injured and Mark Carmody is into the team. I think he was unavailable for the last game anyway, he's an excellent player.

Dowling is a superb player, he'll probably be on the senior team next year. Carmody is a possibility to be on the panel too...Jack Aherne and Barry O'Connell are superb players too. Don't know all of them but the team in general is supposed to be quite talented.

Early goal for Waterford, Flynn....not good.

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,264 ✭✭✭✭Fireball07

    Another goal for Waterford!!

    What is Barry doing?

    2-0 to 0-0. Awful start.

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,264 ✭✭✭✭Fireball07

    We are getting absolutely destroyed!!

    A third goal for Waterford.

They're winning absolutely everything, Limerick don't seem to be able to hold the ball. 3-2 to 0-0 after 9 minutes. Very poor.

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,264 ✭✭✭✭Fireball07

Limerick get their first point after 13 minutes through Mark Carmody. Had a few chances now but Dowling has hardly touched the ball in open play.

Pity about the awful awful start.

Dowling just scored a free too, 3-3 to 0-2.

And now Limerick are in the game but hitting bad wides, 5 of them now. Waterford seem to score with every chance.

    3-6 to 0-3...pity...
