The game is actually good but the tutorial last for 3 hours :P

    Let me get something straight.

We have the fal'Cli (both Cocoon and Pulse) and the i'Cli who are humans who have been touched by them and can use magic?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,686 ✭✭✭RealistSpy

    Pulse is the world
Fal'Cie constructed a paradise for humanity called (Cacoon - a shell like city floating on top of pulse)
L'Cie are peoplewho are marked by the Fal'Cie they have majic and can summon eidolons.

War broke out between the Pulse Fal'Cie and the Cacoon Fal'Cie.

I can give you more info :)

how might one pronounce l'cie and fal'cie? Why couldnt Square just come up with a simple name like marclar or somethin?

I reckon the cie is pronounced see. but I don't really know, played an hour and ten mins last night, I've been staunchly opposed to FF for most of my life thought they were a heap of ****e, hopefully i'm going to enjoy this and maybe be a bit of convert.

That's grand. Just getting a bit muddled with it. So we basically have good and bad Fal'Cie and the people who are marked by them. I'm good now. :)

2 hours into the tutorial now! Enjoying it.

On disc 2 already after 5 hours!!! The whole disc 1 is like a massive tutorial!

    I officially can't stand Vanille.

I don't see the hate for her, She's epic in my party!

whats wrong with Vanille? How far are you in the game? Vanille and Sazh are brilliant they seem real but Hope is another story.

Sazh is the only character that seems "real" to me, Vanille is extremely annoying, every time she talks and that ridiculous squeaky Australian accent comes out I want to turn the game off

i think Vanille is real aswell you guys have to remember she is just a kid. She is scared to show her emotions.

I like the fact that her and
    fang
have accents since ya know, they're both from a different world.

Finished the game at 6 this morning. Final boss battle.....I was seriously left scratching my head it was that easy

Hope is a bit irritating, but not the voice, mainly the whiney personality. May change later on. About 4 hours in now. I'm actually really enjoying it. Yes, it's extremely linear, and I've had no real challenges yet, but getting into the swing of this Paragrim Shift thing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,736 ✭✭✭OctavarIan

Hope is a terrible terrible character. Generic looks, generic whiney anime kid personality. "What's the point? We're all going to die anyway. I'll show you... next time..." Why does everything that comes from Japan have to have this character :( I actually swore loudly when he was introduced. Even his name, it's like they're taking the piss

Vanille too. She's a handy fighter, but the constant hyperventilating and fanservice gets a bit much at times. *pant pant pant* "Ooooh, come on!" *pant pant pant*

All the characters so far (5 hours in) haven't been great at all imo. Sazh comes across as an Eddie Murphy tryhard at times, Snow is just an idiot, Lightning is a moody cnut.

Maybe they'll come into their own, but I find them too shallow and typecast right now.

Can't believe they picked her as the narrator at the end of each chapter ,Sazh would have been much better

Hey, could anyone tell me if there's any good trade in deals for this game? I don't have that much money but I wouldn't mind trading in GTA and MW2 if it meant I could buy if for a few quid.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,324 ✭✭✭chrislad

GameStop are giving 20% extra towards trades ins against FFXIII. Probably get the bones of 40 to 45e. Doubt you'd have to put much more than a tenner against it, if even.

Give it some time. Things change, who knows, that could be one of them. ;)

I'm enjoying it a lot. I haven't liked a cast of characters this much since ix. The tutorial elements are far too drawn out though, which is a shame, as the battle system is excellent once it fully opens up.

I've had my eye on this game for a while now, having never played a FF game before, and after some research I went out and bought it today.

I've only just started chapter 3, a few questions:

I notice that each character can specialise in 2 different areas, such as medic, commando etc. Should I focus on only one of their specialisations or should I level them both together evenly like hybrid?

Whats the deal with this pardigm shift (or whatever way its spelled)? Why would I need to switch to healer mode when I have like 40 health potions in my bag?

    Thanks in advance!

As you progress further on more roles will open up to you. In the early stages of the game though I managed to level up my roles evenly, its around disc 3 you start thinking about specialising.

Paradigm shifts are key to success, right now it may seem worthless but later on there will be battles were your constantly changing your paradigm. Its handy with a medic though, sure you can use a potion but your focus isn't on the battle then. Switch paradigm to something with a medic, keep attacking your enemy with an eye on your health, when it's back up in the green change to an all out assaullt paradigm.

The battle system is the best thing about the game.

Anyone else notice how terrible the animation in the in-engine cutscenes gets when you progress to disc 3?

I played the Japanese version, and the characters pronounced L'cie as rushi and fal'cie as farushi.
I don't have a clue how it's pronounced in the English version.

20 hours in... still linear. Story just got very very interesting! Thank god!! Paradigms are brilliant! great shifting around :p

will say tho the summons are AWFUL!!!! Worst summons in any FF game ever!! Hate hate hate it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,026 ✭✭✭docdolittle

About 15 hours in, amazing looking game! :D A few things bugged me though...

All the characters sound like they have tap dancing shoes on walking around..
Vanille has a horrible, horrible voice
And some of the music at the start sounds like rolf harris made it :p

Other than that, I like it :) Some of the characters really remind me of others like squall and tidus... But one thing that was creepy, I think Hope looks really like Micheal Jackson in the Menu screen! :pac:

For what I have read, they're only good for healing your party and giving some protection.

Loving the game so far. 12 hours in and can't wait to get back into it.

    Twenty five hours in.

    Pros: Looks great,sounds great,story is good,strangly compulsive,acceptable voice acting.

Cons: Very, very linear. Takes far too long to get going. Can only control one lead character at a time. Where's the side quests, towns and overworld map? It feels halfway between an rpg and a CGI anime movie. Gameplay is too minimalist for its own good.

hoping that i'll start visiting some towns soon n getting off the one way track ive been stuck on so far!!

There are no towns and the "open exploration" area isn till bout 15-50 hours in and isn that open or require much exploration

I'm at Pampulum now just after bein in control of Fang and Lightning, and put back into the hands of Snow and Hope! Is there really much of a change at this 20 hour mark everyone seems to be talking about!? I'm enjoying the game though and that's all that counts! The story is great although, can be a little bit confusing if ya don't concentrate! :pac:

Just grinding in Chapter 11 atm.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,126 ✭✭✭✭calex71

Enjoying this so far, as said though far too linear for far too long im 30hr's in and only just got to the open world map  Even the bloody level up system is linear !!!!!!

Up till no the whole shop / upgrade system was redundant as everything in such short supply. Really hate the lack of towns and interaction with npc etc. There was also little chance of missing chests.

+ the auto attack system is surprisingly intelligent, well better than expected anyway so don't mind not have total control over the others as the shifts work well also.

    - this seems to be final fantasy for today's generation :(

The story is quite good although I really want Hope to just die a painful death.

Finally finished this the other day.
The poorest of the final fantasies so far I thought.Such a grind I thought.Couple of hours in I just didn't want to play it anymore.
Only redeeming feature was some of the cutscences were good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,024 ✭✭✭Moiph

I think I'm quite close to the end of this now, may try and finish it this week before the pile of games coming out over the next few weeks.

    QFT.

Such a poor outing. A company that has had it's budgets bloated over the years, massive teams, entire orchestra's to play with, professional voice actors. But unfortuantley on the way they forgot not only how to make a good game but why they are making it in the first place.

I wag my finger at them and say 'shameful!!'

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,553 ✭✭✭murphyebass

ok I think this looks amazing. I really do. Stunning in fact. I really want to give it a go but I've never got the hang of turn based RPG's. I just dont "get" them.

Should I buy it give it a go and attempt to get into it? Or is it too late for me now.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,477 ✭✭✭✭Raze_them_all

Skip it, trust me skip it. My house mate was convinced how great a game it had to be cos of the budget and graphics.....how wrong he was. I bought it expecting it to be crap for the first 20 hours but then be amazing for the last 20-30...how wrong I was

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,126 ✭✭✭✭calex71

It was a linear grindfest and once I got to the end I had zero desire to go back and do the rest of the "sidequests" etc and usually I'm very OCD about FF games but sure by that point any ultimate weapons etc would have served no purpose what so ever

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 163 ✭✭jamezy

Im just going to add one more name to "FF XIII Sucked" consensus... I was just gutted at how much this blew. I too gave up on it which isn't like me, well at least with FF games.

Heres hoping XIII versus gets an Xbox release and tries to make up for XIII.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,027 ✭✭✭Lantus

Theres alot being said about the whole linear thing and I thought I'd pipe up and give my 50gil worth.

It's no secret that most RPG's are linear and the FF series is no exception. Theres a start point, a middle and an ending and a whole hell, of a lot inbetween bits. What makes it all wonderful is that in most games you dont notice it. It's the journey not the destination thats the pleasure. From midgar to kalm, across mountains, the bicanel deserts, those incredible bosses, moments of quiet like crossing the moonstream. Side quests as interesting as yuffies hometown, or the emotion at reaching red XIII's village and his grandad.

All linear and all totally absorbing. The story unfolds, and like a good book your so wrapped up in it you just cannot wait to reach the next page, fingers ready to leaf the page.

FFXIII wasn't like that. From the outset it was a lonley and souless experience, replicit in graphical splender but missing all the basic building blocks of a good story. There's no shame in saying something is bad when in all honesty is is, even if you love the heritage.

The real crime is to twist your own soul and try to believe the massive hype surrounding the latest offering. When we all bow down and eat the s**t being served and declare that it tastes good then the series is dead. If enough of us stand up and speak from the heart then hopefully there will enough good people at SE to listen and make good the broken.

    Time will tell.
