I applied last year and tried to be 'fair' on the questionnaire by not picking the most desirable answer on everything. I got rejected then!

I figured I had nothing to lose by choosing the best responses - I am a hard worker, and I'm not going to let an automated selector ruin by hopes of work.

So, thanks to this thread for alerting me to the vacancy, and thanks to last years' applicants for making me do the right thing this year, and choose the best answers!

And thanks for sharing your experience; we won't undersell ourselves next time ;). Everyone who got through did really well, given the volume of applicants.

    I got it! top band...
Does anybody have any info about what happens from here on?
When would the interview take place and what kind of q's should I be prepared for?
I heard I'd have to make an awful balls of the interview to lose out now, any truth in that?
Sorry to those who were unlucky btw....

You would have to be pretty bad to mess up the interview :) Mine was around 10 minutes long. They asked me about my previous jobs and thats about it. Just wear something nice and talk about how much love doing paper work and drinking tea and you will be fine

    Rejected. Meh.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 190 ✭✭skitzyspider

Interviews are normally the first week in May. They last approx. 10mins and they email you an interview form beforehand to fill out...you are asked to give examples of how you demonstrated working as part of a team/what you could bring to the role of temp clerical officer/planning and organising etc.. They also ask a few questions off the questionaire to verify your answers. Its a pretty relaxed interview and everyone I have ever talked to has always been sucessful:D

    Hope this helps...good luck:D

Rejected... Anyone else find the e-mail a little ambiguous?

Sort of like, "well we're not going to employ you, but let's stay friends, yeah?"

Yeah, a bit ambiguous alright. Mine said:

"It is unlikely that we will be inviting you to the next stage of the selection process."

Does that mean PFO or there´s still a chance?

    Rejected also...

What have I learned from this? That being honest is not a good thing. You need to lie in order to get to where you want to be. Great...

Next year I will remove any sense of morals I have and lie through my teeth, picking the best answers for all the questions...

Thanks for all the info everyone, I am on the reserve list, I may or may not get an interview/ position, I am out of work ten months now so fingers crossed something comes of this. Well done to those who got reserve / top rank and I'm sorry to those who got the sorry we regret, it sucks.

I got the email confirming I'm in Top Band. So here's hoping. I've been unemployed for nearly two years now... and it's soul destroying. Even 12 weeks work would do so much for my moral and my finances.

It occurs to me, perhaps location and number of temp jobs available in that area has a lot to do with this. I'm based in Wexford so it's fair to assume there would be less applicants down here than say in Dublin or Cork or the larger populated areas.

I'm also wondering about the pension levy. I read on page 1 that although it's taken off the salary we're not entitled to a pension BUT we get the money refunded at the end of our contract. Is that true? I can't believe they'd take pension money off us and then give us no pension, but hey, with this Government ANYTHING is possible.

Correct, you will pay the pension levy while there.

You will be refunded at the end of your contract if you fill in a particular form - cannot remember the form title, but something about superannuation. I worked with Teagasc a few times and was refunded. Remember to do fill in that form, though, as otherwise you will lose it (as I did the first time 'cos I didn't know). Well done!

What is the name of that form and which Govt organ could I get it from (Revenue? or the Dept I worked in)

Maybe I have some money due from last summers work.
All I got back was emergency tax

I went to have a look through my papers to see if I have anything there, but no luck, I'm afraid. Usually I make a copy of everything, but for some reason I don't have this. But it's your department's head office you need to contact, and ask for the Superannuation (Pensions) form - they'll know what you mean. Don't take it for granted that you can still claim anything back, I'm not sure if there's a time limit or not. Good luck though!

Ye, if your in the top band, you'll definetely be getting a job. The interview is really just a formality. Everyone who gets an interview pretty much has got the job!! Congrats!!

I was put in the top band last year and was workin for 3 months. Unfortunately, i'm only in reserve this year so i'm really dissappointed...But theres still hope so fingers crossed.

To be honest, a lot of jobs go in the passport office in Ballbriggan which would be considered pretty far out for a lot of people and also the trip out there can be pretty pricey so a lot of people do turn it down......As far as i know there was nothing offered in City Centre...bu who knows...might be different this year!!

I'm in the "reserve band" for Kildare... ;) So just have to wait and see...

I'd really love to know how they score that questionaire though it's a bit mad!!

    Hey all,

Firstly congrats to all who were successful and sorry to those who were not. Just wondering if anyone has experience of working in this position and the possibilities of it being extended to full time position. I know especially now this is highly unlikely!!! Also would it be too hopeful to think that you would be positioned in a department that is relevant to your experience/qualifications. For example im currently studying Finance and would like to gain experience as a bonus......Is this way too much to ask???

I know in the questionnaire they asked whether you wanted full time or part time. I ticked full time and was successful (well top band)

    Thanks in advance.

I did 2 summers in the temp CO role and there wasn't any opportunity for me to have that directly converted to a permanent position, but I did get a few extra weeks onto the contract and when I went for a permanent position in a different competition I easily got the job, so it will stand to you if a competition does happen.

More than likely you will just be assigned to a Department which needs extra staff. I dont know if you could express a preference where you would like to work at the application stage? You could before anyway. No harm raising it at the interview saying that you are willing to work anywhere but would prefer to be in a role in Finance as you are studying it.

I wonder how likely it is to get called for interview if you're in the top band?

I imagine since there was likely to be a huge amount of applications, that there is a larger top band than previous years. Maybe there is going to be random picking of people?

I wouldn't be too dissapointed. A weekly salary of €378, 21 days holidays and mind numbing work. I'd rather be on the dole, which would afford you a similar lifestyle.
€196 + rental allowance + medical card + fuel allowance. None of the transport or costs associated with working either.

With the recruitment embargo still in place there is no chance of this becoming a permanent position. (I'm assuming by full time you mean permanent?)

You will have absolutely no say regarding what department you are put in. You'll go where they need you to be. You might be lucky and be put into finance if thats where they're short. The candidate will fit the position, not the other way around.

Some of us don't get rental allowance (either because we don't live in slums, or aren't prepared to lie about the rent we pay). I can live pretty well on 378 (or whatever it is per week after tax, will be different for different folks depending on credits etc), I can't live on 196/week.

And anyway, I'd rather be earning my own keep than drawing down the dole. Just on principle.

Mind-numbing, maybe. But I see it as just another temping gig, and I'm sure that whatever they ask me to do won't be any worse than some of the other gigs I've had in the last 12 months.

And if it is bad, then I'll keep remember that it's just a temp gig. One day at a time, one step closer toward some decent IT projects starting again and me getting better work!

Well said! I second all of that. I would be happy to be in any job at the moment, mind numbing it may be, but I will be earning my own way. And it is very hard to live on 196, whereas 378 I can def live on.

You won't be living anywhere better on that wage.

In fairness you should be much better off than somebody on the dole but in reality you will be no better and that is completely wrong.

The central statistics office will be recruiting people in the near future for the forthcoming census. It is only for a few weeks but it is something anyway to help pay the bills. I did it the last time in 2006.

    http://www.cso.ie/census/census2011jobs.htm
› Senior Managers at national and regional level to manage the census field operation

› Field Supervisors to manage the census field work at field district level

› Census Enumerators to carry out the census enumeration work throughout the country

Upcoming competitions for the three separate posts will be advertised on this website over the coming months, starting in April 2010. Please note that applications for all the above posts can only be made online on the CSO website www.cso.ie at the appropriate time.

That is exactly why people say the dole should be reduced. There has to be an incentive to work. Although as someone else said above, not everybody can claim everything you say.

Even still I can't even begin to understand why you are saying that. Taking any job now will look good when applying for future jobs. What sounds better to an employer: I got experience working for the public service/I applied for several jobs etc or I sat on my ass, made no effort and got the dole.
