Suggestions for round the world ticket FROM New Zealand?

A friend of mine is looking to do round the world from Wellington via the States (into west, out of east), his home in Galway, China and / or Japan, around April / May and the prices he was quoted in STA have just jumped up by $800 ($2,500 to $3,300) over the past few weeks. I was wondering does anyone have any experiences…

I was wondering does anyone have any experiences of this type of travel and where he could look at getting alternate quotes in New Zealand / online?

I mainly use House of Travel on Lambton Quay (www.hot.co.nz) and United Travel are cool as well. Expedia?
