Heard on the radio yesterday that Dublin city council are in negotiations with MacDonalds to rename O'Connell street to MacDonalds street in a multimillion euro sponsorship deal. If all goes well, other streets might follow.

It would be great if this were the case. Daniel O Connell was an almost wholly, if not wholly, negative figure in Ireland's history. He despised Irish Ireland and viewed Irish culture as backward and Britishness as progress. There is no way in hell that modern Ireland should have the main street in its capital city named after this individual.

It was O Connell who, in 1832, infamously coined the term West Briton to describe himself and people who shared his view:

"The people of Ireland are ready to become a portion of the Empire, provided they be made so in reality and not in name alone; they are ready to become a kind of West Briton if made so in benefits and justice; but if not, we are Irishmen again."

    You whippersnappers!
It's Drogheda Street and it always will be!

Impressive! The link for the rest of you: Henry Moore from Drogheda = Henry Street, Moore Street and Drogheda Street.

Wouldn't surprise me if They did do this.

The GAA would never give up the rights to Croker.

Was it in the Daily Mail by any chance?

It seems to be a matter of loyalty to your city. Can you imagine the scene if they proposed to rename the Shankill Road in Belfast McDonald's Road? All the people there would SCREAM! GTFO!!!

Maybe it's just me, but I don't see anything negative in that.

He wanted us to have an equal standing to the English in the British Empire if we were to be a part of it; if we didn't then Ireland would leave the Empire.

easy say that but you weren't around in the late 1700s to mid 1800s were you?
at least he seen the Irish and its people as equal to the rest of the world and wanted them to have equal rights. who is to say he wasn't hoping we'd be 'west British' in terms of the infrastructure of the day? he may have wanted Ireland to play a bigger part in the industrial revolution and may have thought the only way to do it was to keep closer links with Britain.

going OT but for example, what did the great De Valera do for Ireland again? he certainly wasn't on the first line fighting because there seems of be alot of places around my locality where he hid during the WOI. He played no part in the formation of the state but he let Collins and co sign the treaty and bring back the bad news.

It's true, Limerick's O Connell st is going to be renamed after it's favourite son, Paul O Connell.

O Connel St is dead! Long Live O Connell St!

Junkie St. would be more apt.

Bet they don't have junkies in Cork boy...

Those jackeens up in the big smoke would rob the fillings from your teeth, or so i heard from my uncle who went there once.

Best to stay down in the countryside where it's nice and safe.

It would be good to just have numbered streets instead.

They do in Milton Keynes, V1-9 & H1-13, getting to work used to be a bit of a crossword; five down and 7 across!

Sellout avenue would be a good choice

It would be impossible to do that in Dublin, or in fact any Irish city, using the conventional format.

We have winding cities, which is why Dublin was a hugely popular drinking spot at the start of the 1900's. Because it wasn't as regimented as some places.

Wouldn't work cos' we don't have a grid system - the streets wouldn't follow a logical order.

Far be it for me to defend Stove, I believe that we actually have contracts on one another at the moment, but I am pretty sure he was just acting the maggot, tongue in cheek, ribbing ya's etc etc, when he suggested numbering the streets.

Not to mention the fact that he was only a pacifist where Ireland was concerned. He fully supported the Opium Wars.

;) wow! I would never have believed that! Then again we could always call it Stráid Daichead Cúig and spin around like a record!
