relay protection

I have a relay under the bonnet for my HID wiring. I'm expecting the NCT people to question the quality of the tesco bag I have around ....

I use heat shrink covers for other wiring jobs but I can't find anything suitable for the relay due to its size. It's about 1 inch cube.

    Any suggestions?

    Cheers.

would it not be easier to remove the relay extend the cable with electric wire and shrink wraps and place the relay somewhere else in car? i.e behind the dash?

A company called innovation in Dublin make a few products that can help. They have vulcanising tape - which is like a stretchy electrical tape, you wrap it around and around the relay, and when it tries to revert to it's original shape, it turns into a protective rubber coating.

I *think* they have heat shrink around that size too, but its been ages since I've seen their catalogue.

Any electrical wholesale shop(for the domestic 3 wire lads) will sell shrink wrap that will easily cover a complete relay, most of the relays that come with HID kits are waterproof due to the fact that they are designed for underbonnet fitment if you have any doubts Hella make waterproof relays so its just a matter of swapping your relay for a waterproof one of the same spec.

edit: this is what your looking for

maplin stock all shapes and sizes of waterproof project boxes/enclosures. Reckon you'd find one that'd fit the bill very nicely. It would also make for easier access than heatshrink if it needs attention in the future.

    Thanks Lads.

    You know stuff :D

EDIT: - The relay wasn't stock with the HID kit, had to wire up to the battery coz there was a voltage drop on the headlight wiring which was insufficient for the ballast.

The 'shrink wrap' mentioned above is also known as 'self-amalgamating tape', and motor factors who carry Durite stuff should have it (part number 0-557-50):

Its under the bonnet, assuming its mounted the right way up, unless you plan to go swimming with your car I can't see the need to protect it. Toss the Tesco bag and carry on...

    Cheers.
