Em...difficult one that! Maybe because they haven't got any savings !
If they don't have any savings they can starve.

and what would you do if/when your savings run out
Either ask social welfare for money or shoot myself. This is at least 2 years in the future so I'm not worried yet.

just say they get paid the min wage and have no means of saving for a rainy day should they starve as well if made redundant.

Why should it be my problem?

Not that I'm defending SLUSK's position, but it's quite possible for a minimum-wage worker to save a bit of cash - the minimum wage isn't all that minimal.

I'm all for a reduction in the dole, but this kind of statement is just nonsense. I reckon you'd re-evaluate your standpoint if you had to put it to the test yourself. I would HATE to live in a society which casts people aside to starve, regardless of whether I ever needed social welfare myself or not. Thankfully most human beings agree and where possible have created welfare states, even in the US you will not starve because you have no job. They have food stamps (something which should be looked at in Ireland for those on long term benefits).

And what if you had a heart attack or broke your leg? Would you not expect in a civilised society you would be looked after to some extent? And would you abolish pensions too?Do you want us to go back to Dublin in the early part of the last century with kids in bare feet in winter etc etc. And as for being able to live on the dole I don't agree. If you have no mortgage, no kids, no loans at all you might do it for a while. And better hope you keep well because despite what some of you say you don't get handed a medical card with your P45 the day you walk out the door. A friend of mine's husband lost his job in Dec 08. Early 50s, couple of kids, you get the picture. Welfare were working off the income he had earned in 2007 so he got no medical card. He's now on JSA so will probably get one now after God knows how much assessment and red tape. My friend's TV licence is out of date 2 weeks and An Post have given her 2 more weeks to come up with the cash or off to court she goes. Her car tax and NCT is out of date too. They have a smallish mortgage and they've been killing themselves to keep it out of arrears. Thank the gods I have never been in that position. What that couple are doing is not living. It's dying of stress very slowly.
