    Hi all,

    First post so...............

Trying to decide between a 07 new model Mondeo 1.6 Lx or 1.6 Zetec. Mileage is 38,000km v 46,000km and both from private dealers looking for same money. Lx has fogs and alloys which isn't standard I've been told along with 3mths tax and 6mth warranty. Zetec has all the trimings but no warranty.

    Any hints/advice?

No, no, no! Not a 1.6, you'll lose the will to live with such a weedy little engine. A 1.8 just about copes in an Avensis(which is much lighter than the Mondeo) so a 1.6 would struggle big time in that car never mind a Mondeo which is much bigger(and heavier).

A small engine is a false economy because it will be so underpowered and therefore will need to be worked very hard which means that you'll just be guzzling the fuel unless you drive it around town all the time.

In spite of potential Dual Mass Flywheel problems with the diesel I'd have it every time(it is very reliable apart from the DMF), but try and find a nice 08 one with the lower road tax.

A Mondeo is a brilliant car, it really is but not with that 1.6, and definitely not the poverty spec LX model:)!

    Zetec every time.

p.s. I used a 1.6 Mondeo for a few days recentlty. No rocketship but the engine was better than expected.

    No brainer here, the Zetec.

BTW how does one of them have a 6 month warranty if both are private sellers? The original Ford warranty is surely up on a 07 by now. If it is a used warranty that the current owner got then check with the garage who honors it that it is transferable to you.

Also you say private dealers, not sure there is such a thing, either they are registered as a dealer or they are not registered and just selling cars on the side from their property.

Sorry both are private sellers. The Lx owner took out an extra yrs warranty so it's valid till august. only real draw back with zetec is that it has a few extra scratches which are more noticeable because of colour. anyone else have doubts about d engine size versus d car size or any other doubts 4 that matter??? what sort of money should i be willing to part with

You'd be better off dropping back a year and getting a diesel for much the same money. Go for the Zetec or even a Ghia if you can find one. I've had a couple of Mondeos and the diesel is a better option over the petrol any day. DMF aside they don't give much trouble. Although they do tend to leak water in the footwells so check for this before buying. Three of us have Mondeos in work and they all leaked water at some stage. Its an easy enough fix if your any way handy at diy but something o keep in mind.

Go for the Zetec becasue "The day you buy is the day you sell", ie: it was have better resale.

The Mondeo 1.6 Petrol has variable cams so it's power output is 113PS, more than a 10% increase on the Duratec 1.6 in the previous Focus etc.

They are a fab car, unbelievable. They're huge and even the Zetec has cruiuse control and parking sensors as standard.

FYI, dropping back a year will be going into the older shape Mondeo.

    Go buy the Zetec!

Same engine in the Ghia Focus. Father was looking at 1.6's lately and thought it was only ok. In the end went for a 2 litre Petrol Titanium X.

Mondeo is never going to be great for resale anyway so you may as well get the best you can:D

On a side note the UK gets a 125bhp version of the 1.6 litre engine too, you would imagine that Ford would have offered this here given our affection for small engines.

They would be in VRT Band E here, making them super expensive to tax.

Both 110 and 125bhp versions have the same Co2 emissions levels of 170g. Road tax would be the same for both.
