Well it's simple, I'm injured and cannot run my planned first race of the year the 5K St Patricks Festival in Dublin - Does anybody know if there is a procedure for reclaiming an entry fee from races?

I think you're out of luck. With the really expensive races like an Ironman ~300-400 euro and flights etc. you can take out insurance in the event of an injury. I've never heard of an injury clause to reclaim an entry fee. Some race organisers (very, very few) have a way of transferring entries to somebody else.

hardly worth it at 16.60 entry?

Might be worth contacting the organisers anyway. I doubt very, very much if you'll get a refund, but you might be able to defer your entry until next year - ask anyway. I reckon that's your only chance.

No not worth it but just thought it was a worthy question - with half marathons costing around €50.

Also some races are "for profit" so they should/could offer this (so long as there is somebody else that will fill your entry)

I reckon you have two chances with these "for profit" (imho, carpetbagger) race organisers: None ...and the other one!

You probably have a better chance of a refund with some of the smaller races, who may give refunds as a "goodwill gesture"

wrt "for profit" races....Grrr!!:mad::mad: Imho, their effect on the sport will not be to its long term benefit.

Most (not-for-profit) races try to at least break even and in order to do that they assume that a percentage of the people won't make it through injury, etc. There is generally a 20% drop off from online registration. If people who can't make a race started getting their money back then it would drive up the cost for everyone else as the entry fee would need to be higher to cover costs. Many races will however let you defer if you ask - especially the dear ones like Marathons.

Ah no that's fair enough when it comes to "not for profit" races, just thought it was a topic worth bringing up when there are so many "for profit" races popping up. They cannot just see race entries as an easy revenue stream....
