If more people want to do a course, then the points go up.

There is a really good DVD on how the points system works, it can be difficult to explain, most career guidance teachers have it so if confused I'd say have a look. Very useful.

You don't happen to know if the vid. is available online? ... would be handy to link it here.

I was genuinely shocked last summer by how many people on here didn't have even the most basic understanding of how CAO system works!

this is not good at all, food science was 385 last year and now its going up 9% which means its going to be 420 points this year!
and many other courses are going up!

Hmm? The percentage increase in applicants isn't directly proportional to the percentage points increase.

And this is only showing first preferences!

Ok I have a question...the course I want to do (primary teaching) has decreased in applicants by 4% or so. (woo!). Does this mean that points *may* decrease and won't likely increase?

Please let the decrease in law applicants continue right 'til the end! Please!

We should start a quiz of CAO questions. I'll get the ball rolling

Q1. I really want to do arts in UCD more than anything else but I'll never get it because the most points I'm going to get is 330 because I did crap in the mocks. I'll put UCD arts number 10 just in case I do get the points. This is the right thing to do isn't it?*

    * Do not attempt this at home

    Why????

Because 26% less people have applied for it this year and most of the Pharmacy courses are in around the 500 point mark.

Ah crap it says computer science went up by almost a third which is most likely the case in UCC aswell :(

It would suggest that it is likely to stay around the same (assuming there isn't a late surge under the change of mind facility).

Do bear in mind though that the numbers applying are not the only factor.

If (hypothetically) 1,000 applied for 200 places last year, and the last person to be accepted got 425 points, then 425 was the cut-off.

If exactly 1,000 applied again this year, again for 200 places, but the results of those applying were generally better, and the last person to be accepted got 440 points, then that would be the cut-off.

So numbers applying aren't the only factor involved.

All that said, while the above could theoretically happen, big shifts for that reason aren't common. The fact that numbers applying has stayed much the same probably will mean that the points will stay much the same as well.

This is unlikely to be the vid in question but it may save someone http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FC-1CFUCLr0

That makes a lot of sense. Thanks.

I am praying it will go down because I don't want to go to NUI Maynooth or DCU to do Law when I live very near UCD
Lets hope people remove it from their applications as well:D

    That would be very handy

An indication of the way a 20% decrease in applicants for a subject does not necessarily mean a 20% drop in points can be seen by going to last years application stats figures on www.cao.ie and comparing with the drop in points through www.qualifax.ie

Ok, this has scared the living **** out of me. I want to do Arts in UCD, which is 360 atm, and i got 395 in the mocks. Surely it can't go any higher than 380, right?

I would say it won't go higher than 380 because there are over 1,200 places in UCD arts. UCD Arts can absorb an increase in demand more than any other course in the country. Statistically a 10% increase in demand will not result in a 10% increase in points for arts I would say.

But isn't there a new way of applying for UCD arts this year where you can pick subjects on your CAO instead of waiting till august/september? How does this work? Do different arts subjects now have different points?

Speculation now is that it is going up to 400 but I can't see that happening maybe 390 is a very realistic possiblity but there are places like UCC, NUIG, NUIM and WIT that offer Arts courses so you don't know where people have put down on their CAO

Yes there is a different way to choose Arts this year. You can either choose DN012 and do a general Arts degree like in previous years or you can choose to do specialise in two subjects and minor in two subjects. Fortunately, the points are the same for all choices through the DN012 system.

The CAO is closed until May. I have Arts down in both NUIM and UCD but for UCD I left it blank and if I get it in UCD I will decide what I want to do when I get there
