What does that mean? The winner of the contract will be tasked with liaising with, say, landowners?

Varadkar has namedropped "Dublin Metro" (as opposed to "Metro North") in his vision for Ireland: http://leovaradkar.ie/2017/09/my-vision-for-ireland/

Further sign that this will encompass more than SSG-Lissenhall?

I'd say his main reason for using the phrase is MN was a FF idea.

Call it DM and make it sound like a FG idea.

It's just good branding PR in general. "Dublin Metro" is an easier sell to the whole city vs "Metro North".

"Dublin Metro" covers Metro North and Metro South (SSG tie in & Green line conversion)

Although considering this state's complete ineptitude regards public transport I'm still not convinced the tie in will actually happen.

For the portion to be converted, would the actual track sizes and width between them have to be enlarged, and maybe this would mean some bridges etc would need widening too?

would be the same standard gauge, so no changes or widening needed.

Platforms would have to be extended and the Green line would have to have road crossings grade separated.

Loading gauge is larger on the green line compared to the red to allow for more separation between carriages in anticipation for metro.

Why do I suspect Shane Ross has a lot to do with that? It was Metro "North" after all, not Metro Stepaside.

Would this be the original version or a reduced capacity version?

This is the New Metro North, design ongoing at present. Capacity reductions haven't been finalised yet

By the time 2021 comes around Dublin Airport will have hub status, a third terminal will be under construction and the second runway will be complete. The 'Airport City' business park will be well advanced and Swords will be the State's 4th largest City. And the NTA will still be fluting around with 60m platforms like a bunch of plebs.

I agree with a lot of your frustration but there is no way a third terminal will be under construction in 2021. Not necessarily due to lack of requirement but apart from being too soon, the same govt would drag their feet on this too.

To the immense relief of the private bus companies.

Well that's a tremendous let down. As such, there is no major infrastructure work underway in the Capital from the end of this year (well from now really) as it slowly grinds to a halt. Disgraceful.

No major rail infrastructure work apart from the final phase of the city centre re-signalling project (which is Connolly) which is what I take from the report.

BRT and bus corridor investment is really the sole focus.

BRT is an obfuscation. Build the ****ing things that will make a long term difference and that were needed two decades ago.

A agree, the BRT lines are costing hundreds of millions. they are a joke, if they came with a price tag that matched their "usefullness" fair enough. We need game changers like DU and MN, which we are told we dont have enough money for the original schemes, yet there are hundreds of millions to be wasted on rubbish like this proposal. dublin is way past the point of pathetic and very costly "solutions" like BRT...

All probably because some eejit in Doheny and Nesbitts thought it was a good idea. "Trams! With No Rails or Overhead!" "Jayzus Sean, you've got a good idea there.. now where's me taxi home?"

Oh the can, kick and road, way of doing things is still alive and well in Leoland.

We need all of MN, DU and BRT/BusConnects - we can't not do anything about the bus service either.

Plenty of areas of the city will still rely on the bus service even if MN and DU are built.

They aren't and should not be mutually exclusive.

The new plan is to link with the Green line and that would mean there would be a stop close enough to Stepaside.

That 'new plan' was never officially announced though, I could genuinely believe this might be Ross angling for that to be made part of the accelerated project before he lets it happen.

It'd be lovely and fine to go ahead with BRT (not sure why you're lumping BusConnects in with that though), but realistically we all know that it will be used to say that MN and DU aren't necessary by politicians.

The money is going towards investment in the bus service - that's the BusConnects project. BRT will form part of that ultimately.
