Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Putting a Pick-up into a Big Baby Taylor

Guys I have a Big Baby Taylor that I want to put a pick-up into. I am in the Dublin area, I want to get a good job done but I need to keep it to sub €150.

I have got a quote from the guy in Guitar fix on Exchequer st. It is quite reasonable for a second hand fishman pickup and fitting.

I was also recomended to call Derek Nelson, but is this like asking Michaelanglo to plaster a cattle shed?

I don't think it is a very tricky job (I am a total know nothing about this stuff) but I want it done right with no scams or chicanery.

Like I said any and all advice is very welcome.

search for K&K pickups from the states.
    http://www.kksound.com/puremini.html
they deliver here and their PURE pickups are lovely (and need very little alteration to your instrument (end pin jack removal and replacement which is easy). They mount under the bridge and come with clear instructions on how to do it. Not very well known but really produce a beautiful tone from an acoustic guitar. Searching for reviews will give you an indication of who uses them and why. I have one in my Martin and am very happy.
Here is one on ebay at the mo:

Under saddle pickups are also available from Fishman etc but require you to drill a tiny hole through the saddle slot .

Thanks for this. It is definately worth pondering. The BB Taylor endpin is mounted inside with a screw as far as I know.

You could try this crowd in the States
    http://www.maurysmusic.com/inc/sdetail/174
Good deal depending on shipping costs. They know their pickups too - I recall him doind some research on the various sorts when I was looking myself.

Ignore the above! Just saw that there are no exceptions in their delivery note that they do not ship to overseas locations. Apologies.

I'd be ok for a US address. Thanks all the same.

Check out the new MISI pickups developed by two ex-fishman people. Great sound and also they have no batteries so you plug the guitar into the wall socket with the plug/lead provided for 60 seconds and it will keep you going for 8 hours.

Thanks for all the advice lads. I think I am going with Derrick Nelson to install a passive pick-up in it. His is the best quote I got and he has been recommended to me by people from several quarters.

actually, if you bring your quote to james hayes of jamescustomguitars.com he guarantees to beat any quote :)

Please do not install a pure western in that lovely guitar! After all the internet hype I installed one in my precious Martin a few years back. I played a gig with it in town and it was an absolute disaster. Feedback city all night long. Ruined the gig completely for me.
A year later I decided to give it a shot again in Drogheda with a different soundman...again same story. Just couldn't dial out the low frequency feedback. I then purchased a Sunrise pickup with the SB1 preamp...very expensive but no feedback to worry about. The fishman acoustic matrix pickups are also very nice.
