Pretty much whoever more comfortable doing it. As has been said, Austin would nearly always call his matches due to his hearing. Guys like Triple H meanwhile probably dont like being told what to do so they'd call it.

Cena, I'd imagine. With him being full time active in the ring and all. But these guys would have a framework for the match worked out beforehand, like a sequence of moves, each numbered. So, for example, seq 1 could be, headlock, hammerlock, reversal, backdrop, whip, leapfrog, headlock takeover. So all that needs to be called is 1 in the ring and they launch into it.

You trying to kill Rock??? He couldnt manage all that! :pac:

Who would have called the Rock-Cena matches?

Cena called them. You could hear the calls quite clearly at times. Was watching Botchmania the other night and there were quite a few clips from that match.

    2:45 onwards

Why isnt Wrestlemania XXX at Madison Square Garden following the first, the tenth and the twentieth Mania being held there?

It's too small. WWE want massive stadiums.

Because nostalgia doesn't provide good dividends for shareholders.

    Not always.

Isnt the bulk of Mania money made on PPVs? If they always wanted stadiums then using the tiny Trump Plaza for Manias 4 and 5 made no sense. I always thought that Mr Trump must given Vince a big brown envelope to get him to put it there two years in a row at the absolute height of WWE's 80s popularity.

It's probable that he did. And just cause the bulk of the money would be made on the PPV portion, doesn't mean they'd go for the smaller venue when they've shown they can fill stadiums.

Thats the reasoning now. 25 years ago it was different.

wwe did big gates at mania 4 and 5 (3 times the amount of mania 1) with casino buys alot like ufc use same casino buys today to inflate their ppv gates in las vegas.

mania 4 and 5 drew bigger gates than mania 15 and 16 at the height of the attitude era.

Hasn't been in a small arena since 22, it's too big now and makes too much money for the host cities to warrant holding it in a smaller venue. Bigger stadium= more people=more visitors to the city=more money. The revenue the week leading up to it and Mania weekend itself generates is mental.

Q: (this is going back a way but) does anyone know when exactly Sky stopped show the WWF PPV's for free on the basic 'Sky Channel' and instead started showing them on the pay channel Sky Sports? I think it was sometime between Wrestlemania 6 and 7 (so 1990-91)?

Failing a date, does anyone know what the last PPV that aired free on Sky Channel back then?

Also another question. Were the PPVs on Sky Channel delayed coverage? I seem to recall they premiered in 'regular' viewing time, so I guess maybe they were shown a few days after the live event?

Whats a Casino Buy? Did Vince get a large cut of the hotel's casino take on those two weekends?

Are there any instances of a wrestler failing to kick out when he should have maybe where he had a legitimate injury or a lapse of concentration?

I think Sting at Starrcade 97 vs Hogan would qualify as that, either the ref forgot to do a fast count or Sting wasn't paying attention and it looked like a legit 3 count.

I think I remember seeing on one of the early Botchamanias Dean Malenko forgetting to kick out against someone (possibly Billy Kidman) and the ref having to play it off as Kidman winning the match because it was too obvious to try and fake.

The failure to kick out thing happens a lot, just not in WWE. Especially in tag matches. The referee will usually just pretend the kick out happened despite it not happening.

Sting pinned Jeff Hardy and didn't let him kick out in a title match a while ago in TNA, in a match that lasted about 3 minutes, 2 minutes of which was Hardy wandering around the ring holding his tshirt. Apparently Hardy was high as hell so Sting just thought fukk this and rolled him up.

That was intentional. Hardy was out of it so they told Sting to just pin him. They never told Hardy so he couldnt fcuk it up. He was taken off TV for a good 6 months as punishment.

I know, but the question was examples of someone not kicking out when they should have, and since Hardy was supposed to I thought it kinda fit.

Then there is the other side of the coin!

Mick Foley had a match with Sandman in ECW, and someone in the crowd handed Mick a heavy Iron skillet to slap Sandman upside the head with. Mick, thinking it was a light, aluminium pan, absolutely drilled Sandman with it.

Sandman was instantly concussed, and turned to autopilot for the rest of the match. Problem with this was, every time Mick attempted to pin Sandman, he would kick out - strongly. So, when it came time for match finish, Sandman would continue to kick out:eek:

That was a last man standing match as well were you had to pin your opponent and then they had 10 seconds to get up. Sandman kept jumping up after around 4-5 seconds every time :P

Men On a Mission won the WWF Tag Team Titles on tour of Europe in the 90's when one of the Quebecers couldn't kick out of the 500lb Mabel's pin. It wasn't supposed to happen and the titles changed back 3 days later.

a casino buy is where the casino purchases a ticket (s) for an event taking place in their casino well above the cost price and then gives said ticket (s) to high rollers/celebs as a gift.

if you wonder why tickets for something like floyd mayweather fights are so expensive its because the casino buys a big % of the tickets for a big mark up right off the bat.

But Hardy wasnt supposed to kick out. That was the idea. Sting held him down, ref counted, job done before he does something stupid. Hardy was in no condition to wrestle and everyone knew it.

Another one I can remember is a tag match with Miz failing to break up a pin on Morrison in time. I remember there was a bit of a hullabaloo over it online at the time because the young referee was released shortly afterwards. It happened on the 'ECW' brand, 2008 iirc.

Why didnt WWE keep JR on the payroll when no one has come even close to matching him on commentary? By all accounts Vince has treated him like a doormat over the past couple of decades.

Was listening to the stone cold podcast there on the way into work, the interview with Steven Regal. Now at one point Austin asks Regal about the Savage / Steamboat match at wrestlemania 3. Regal says something along the lines that he loved the match, until he talked to STeamboat (I think) and he found out something that happened behind the scenes. Neither Austin or Regal explained any further than that ... so anyone know what was the story with that?

I only listened to that myself last night and wondered myself. Would love to know the story too if anyone can shed light on it?

By all accounts, Vince hates JR, and would have gotten rid of him long ago had he not feared backlash from fans and the backroom.

Could it be that Savage broke his balls so much by choreographing every single solitary detail of the match in advance?
