This John Laurenitus chap, has he actually been in WWE years an if so what is his actual role? Or is he just a paid actor?

His TV job title is actual job title. 3rd most powerful person in the company too.

has he just placed himself on tele for an ego trip then? Surely it would make more sense to get an actor in with some charisma?

Funnily enough, WWE are going all 'reality' on this one -- John Laurinaitis is actually the Executive VP of talent relations (i.e. extremely high on the WWE totem pole). That job used to be JR's. He started as a road agent (who helps put matches together amongst other things) when WCW closed in 2001. This is his first on-air role in WWE - no small wonder why - you might have noticed just how awful his delivery is! He's the brother of Road Warrior Animal, aka Joe Laurinaitis; and is a retired wrestler ("Johnny Ace" - who was part of a tag team called the Dynamic Dudes - so when you hear skateboard references and the like aimed at him, it's an inside joke about that.)

He still does his backstage ("real") job in addition to being on-air talent for the time being, until Vince loses interest/gets a PPV match out of him for some reason.

My two cents : Vince has final say on the WWE product so this is his doing. He's on a reality kick at the moment (ever since Punk's shoot-style promo in July where he 'outed' John Laurinaitis; Kevin Nash's constant insider references...) and so wanted the real deal as a caricature of himself, much like Vince McMahon's "Mr McMahon" character in the late 90s/2000s. I imagine he's stayed on because Vince thinks his terribleness is hilarious; or more likely the last few months of storylines kept changing and so he's just there as a temp until they find someone better, which they apparently haven't!

Oh wow, didn't know that. :pac:

And yeah, he's got the job cause of this "Reality era" stuff; since it's his actual job, people can buy into the role quicker and he appeals (in a heel way) to the smark crowd who were giving out about him long before he was back on TV as GM.

On the plus side, at least he knows how to wrestle. It might be nice having an inring payoff for a heel figure that could be a legitimately good match. He was over with Giant Baba's company beforehand, and was a main eventer in Japan (although supposedly because Baba's wife fancied him)

How much money did Jeff Jarrett extort out of Vince McMahon to wrestle without a contract at No Mercy 99? In reports I've read the figure tends to range from a high 5 figure sum to upwards of $300,000. There's also a question that Russo was involved, any truth to this?

Here's my knowledge of it :
It's either $200,000 or $250,000. Russo was high on the booking team at the time and did know that Jarrett was leaving the company; and did him a solid by booking him to retain the IC belt until the PPV, knowing that his contract expired the day before the PPV; so Jarrett would have to sign an extension and hold up WWF for alot of money. Both Jarrett and Russo would be signed with WCW the same month, October 1999. Both have worked together numerous times (and still do in TNA today) so I'd say they both knew exactly what was going on, and it worked. I reckon it's one of the reasons why Russo constantly has a TNA paycheque.

Why did Vince McMahon let that happen?

Vince was under the impression he was signing a new contract.

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,013 ✭✭✭✭jaykhunter

Ya, definitely either he didn't know the actual end-date (assuming he wouldn't be screwed over by his writers) or he thought they'd work out a deal with Jarrett. Put me down for the former; like he wasn't made aware that his contract ends Saturday, and not Sunday until the week of the PPV!

I'm fairly sure Jarrett was priginally booked to lose the IC title at the PPV before No Mercy (Unforgiven; where he retained vs Chyna) but Russo convinced everyone to draw out the feud.

Two Questions i'm wondering had Vince any big plans for Jarrett before he left?
I'm also wondering is the Barrett barrage the wave of moment he is on or is it some sort of vehicle like a chariot?

Like others have said Jim Ross was primarily responsible for that.

Jarrett had a load of momentum at the time. In July 1999 Russo pitched the idea of a Austin/Jarrett feud. But Austin said hell no in the strongest terms as Jarrett called the Austin 3:16 shirt blasphemous. Austin was extremely afraid that would hurt his shirt sales and was annoyed that Jeff didnt get the ok from Steve to use that line. Austin also had serious heat with Jeff's dad Jerry for severely under paying him when Steve was in the USWA at the start of his career. Jerry Jarrett lived in a mansion a on hill, his son Jeff drove a sports car to shows and Steve was eating raw potatoes & sleeping in a car. So Jeff was kind of fecked as a hopeful main eventer if couldnt work with Austin.

There was weidness and paranoia in the Jeff Jarrett camp as Debra was a key part of his act but in real life was dating Austin.

Wait no scratch that, they seem to have changed his name.

He's now masquerading as Kevin Hackman.
Thats horrible, but better than Silent Rage i suppose.

JR said about a week ago he has a lot of work to do to get the call up. He's in FCW at the moment.

Did WCW ever try and sign Shawn Michaels during the Monday night wars?

Seems like he would have been a perfect fit in the nWo.

imo; He was the top guy in the company in 96 (Bret's career was really winding down) and so wouldn't want to leave; but the main reason was.........

he had a long term iron-clad contract with WWF.

I don't know the particulars but I bet Shawn would've gone if he could, make a ton more cash and do something really big in WCW with the lads. When he retired in 97, I imagine he still had a you're-not-going-to-WCW contract in place. In an interview recently, HBK said he stayed in the WWF because he got "creative freedom"...and I really think that's a ton of B.S.

Why did they get rid of the European championship?

Because it was never worth anything. It was below the IC title. Then the merger happened and the US title was brought in as well as new tag champs and a world champ. So it really just had to go. I think it was "merged" into the IC Title which was briefly merged with the WHC.

Even when it was around nobody cared about it anyway.
