Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hey guys,

Quick question I haven't been able to really get an answer to online despite copious googling...

My Canon 10D... what, in peoples experience, is the largest you can go, using a printing service (ie not home printing) before the image really starts to deteriorate? I've blown stuff up to 8x10 ok, but wanted to see how big I could go (friends anniversary coming up, wanted to give him a framed shot he loves)

The reason I ask is because it's a fairly old camera and with 6.3 megapixels, not the biggest resolution. All the posts/ info I have found on printing from it date back to when it was in it's heyday, 5 or 6 years ago, and printing has come on a long way since then...

    Zo

If you were to believe Ken Rockwell [does anybody?] You could print up to billboard size from a 6mp cam :D

I suppose the best way to judge is, think of your monitor, what are the dimensions on that? View the image full screen, does it look clear? If so, a print that size may well look even better as paper is kinder to images than high res monitors can be.

When you view your image full size, as in, not zoomed in or resized to fit the screen, the image will be huge. How does it look when viewing a portion of it full sized? if the pixelation is very evident, then you'll want smaller than full size at least.

    here's a comparison chart -

    http://www.design215.com/toolbox/megapixels.php

    megapixels.gif

Where the numbers in the coloured boxes represent amount of megapixels, and the numbers across the top and down the side are inches.

Going by that, 6mp is good up to 6.5" x 10" - I'm betting you'd get away with a bit more than this, as the picture will be viewed from a few feet right?

Valentia who posts here sometimes did some large prints from a 10D - see picture and discussion here - http://pix.ie/valentia/1050993

i had a similar situation, took a shot at a party once had it on fairly low res as i didnt think i would be printing them off, but a friend asked for a print

i have used Alienskin.com software called Blow up 2, fairly useful for enlarging images up to a certain point,

    - they give a free trail for 30days, worked fairly well & cost nothing

Cheers guys! Good to know people have been enlarging succesfully. Now hopefully he'll like the shot in print as much as on a screen!
