Planting a hedge near a ditch/trees?

We would like to plant an evergreen hedge. It will be southfacing and near a ditch and ash trees. The ground is quite dry and it would have to compete with ash tree roots. If we got some topsoil would it survive here, just wondered before we buy topsoil and plants, was thinking of griselli?

Griselli is a good choice as it is tough and used a lot in coastal areas where winds are very drying so it can cope with a lot. Plant about one metre from the ditch. Prepare the ground by digging a trench rather than dig individual holes for each plant, you are then increasing its survival rate by allowing room for root growth.
