Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I'm so conflicted. I hate the guy, but he's such a character i wish he had qualified. Amazingly stupid decision on the teams part though.

What happened? I haven't followed the qualifying and don't know what convoluted system they have for it.
I'm the same, I don't like him but he should be there. :pac:

Qualifying for Indy is kinda complicated. A bit like to rules to most American sports.

Basically the first 24 places are set on Pole Day with place 25 to 33 set on Bump Day.

PT didn't set a fastest enough time on Pole Day so he got another shot on Bump Day.

On Bump Day he wasn't happy with the time he had set so elected to withdraw his time and have another run. Now unlike F1 and all the other tracks on the Indycar calender, if you decide to have another go at Indy, the time you previously set is wiped.

He abandoned the run as wasn't going fast enough so at the end of the day had no time set when the clock ran out.

Ironically the first time he set would have been fast enough for him to qualify.

With about an hour left in quali, Saavedra was on the bubble, and crashed in practice. Howard and Tracy were in the field; Sato, Kanaan, Lazier and Duno were not yet in the field.

TK qualified, bumping Saavedra. Romancini now on bubble.
    Lazier too slow.
Romancini withdrew, requalified 27th. Howard on bubble.
Sato bumped Howard. Tracy on bubble.
    Howard too slow.
Tracy withdrew, but was too slow to requalify and waved off his attempt. This put Howard back on the bubble.

At this stage, the qualifying line was Howard - Tracy. The order of speed was Howard (33rd) - Saavedra. Tracy had no time as he waved off his attempt, and after having withdrawn his time, had no time.

With less than 2 minutes to go, this meant that either Howard could withdraw his time and go back out, or he could pull out of line to give Tracy a shot. As he was on the bubble, basically it was his choice whether his involvement in the 500 was down to his driving or Tracy's driving. The team decided that it would be best in Howard's hands, so they withdrew the time and took the final run of the day.

He was too slow. This put Saavedra back in the field despite having a crashed car.

That's the official start time yes.
According to a quick google it's currently sunny, but the forecast isn't fantastic. :(

If anyone's reading this could ye tell me what happened to Dixon?

Also Power back up to 8th, looks like the commentators may have been a bit quick to decide he was out of it. ^_^

Not the nicest thing to say but to hear someone has a leg injury after an accident like that is good to hear, all the impact was obviously down there. Hopefully it's nothing to keep him out next week.

    For anyone who missed it:

lucky the tub stayed intact, one of the drivers interviewed mentioned he might have a broken ankle

After the car comes off the fence you can see his leg through the hole in the bottom of the car.

    Good race though overall

Great race. A very high rate of attrition though. Cautions seemed to breed cautions.

Congrats to Dario, although I for one was hoping either Conway or Wilson could've made it :(

And that really was one massive shunt. When I saw the replay the first thing that came to mind was Kenny Brack's massive crash at Texas a few years ago. Conway's lucky to get away with just an orthopaedic leg injury.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 23,316 ✭✭✭✭amacachi

How lucky was Castroneves? Looks like some kind of container smashed just above his helmet.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 23,316 ✭✭✭✭amacachi

Missed the start of the race in Texas, thought it was tomorrow night, seems to be some good side-by-side stuff so far. :)

    EDIT: Dania ****in flying!

Didn't get to watch the race. Usual streamer wasn't working for some reason and couldn't find it on Justin or Veetle :(

I caught the highlights on youtube, seemed like a good race. Why can't F1 just race there instead of building a track in Austin

The highlights don't do the race enough justice. I listened to the race on the IMS radio, and was a little annoyed the highlights didn't show Sato's crash, Simona's crash or some of the problems on pit road for guys like Lloyd.

True, that did peeve me a little. I felt a bit sorry for Baguette though. He almost did a perfect job of missing Moraes and Helio

He shot the gap - and the gap shut in his face.

But, for a rookie, attempting to do something like that did show he has the skills. Just needs the speed and the luck :)

Highlights didn't show Simona's crash!? Thought that would've been top of the pile! Was a little embarrassing for the IRL though I suppose.
If any of you can watch from lap ~65 on, I love oval racing and this was one of the best I've ever seen, at times it actually made me very uncomfortable, the racing was too close.

The commentators were saying something about undoing the HANS, but I've not seen that kind of problem in F1.

Didn't they also say somewhere that the HANS may have already become stuck to the cockpit due to the fire...?

Not the HANS device, the cockpit head support-thingy (name escapes me). Apparently the fit for the drivers head is so tight that you cant get out of the car without removing it. Either it got stuck or in a panic Simona couldnt get it off, so it was very hard to get out of the car as she and the HANS device had to be turned sideways to clear it, which is why she had to be forcibly dragged out of the car

was bad to see two hoses from the trucks not working at all and one of the extinguishers looked a bit under power

was wondering was it hard for her to lift herself out with the side of the car on fire

Dammit, didn't realise the IndyCars started so early...
Was 10 laps into the NASCAR and decided to figure out when the IRL started, to find it was already 240 laps in >.<

Either way, gg to see TK back into winning form.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 23,316 ✭✭✭✭amacachi

Watching it recorded, Pg Dn'd the whole way to avoid spoilers. :P Power looks good, might not be *too* strong for this race but looks good for the next 4/5, he's been falling back the last few. I'm sure this message looks foolish after the last few but I hope this race is good! ^_^

EDIT: Also, I know it's a small track but it's great to see an IndyCar race with a full stand. :)
EDIT 2: I'm sure you can check what lap I'm on, but get Milka off that ****in track.

    http://indycar.com/news/show/55-izod-indycar-series/38223/
LOUDON, N.H. – The Indy Racing League’s IZOD IndyCar Series marks its 200th race Sept. 4 at Kentucky Speedway. In 2011, it returns to one of its original venues.

The IZOD IndyCar Series and Firestone Indy Lights will add New Hampshire Motor Speedway to their 2011 schedules, competing on the 1-mile oval July 30-31. The race weekend precedes another new event for both series – the Baltimore Grand Prix on Aug. 5-7. Tickets to the New Hampshire race go on sale June 28. CLICK HERE

“The fans had asked us to bring back Loudon and we'll be here in 2011,” said Indy Racing League CEO Randy Bernard, who was joined at a news conference at the track by New Hampshire Gov. John Lynch, Speedway Motorsports Inc. founder, chairman and CEO O. Bruton Smith and New Hampshire Motor Speedway executive president and general manager Jerry Gappens.

"As evident last weekend in Iowa, our cars produce tremendous racing on short ovals and we’re pleased to restore an IndyCar short oval to the schedule to further increase our diversity of venues. As a newcomer into the sport, short tracks seem to lend themselves to great racing.

"(The Loudon-Baltimore swing) should be fun for us, and the great part of it is going to an oval and then to a street course. You're going to reach two different demographics in the East.”

The facility played host to one of the five Indy Racing League events in its inaugural year (Aug. 8, 1996) with Scott Sharp taking the checkered flag. It also was the site of Robbie Buhl’s first victory (Aug. 17, 1997) and Tony Stewart’s third (June 28, 1998). CART sanctioned races on the variably-banked (2 to 7 degrees) oval from 1992 to ’95.

“I won when we raced there so it has good memories,” said Dreyer & Reinbold Racing co-owner Buhl, who grabbed the lead from Eddie Cheever Jr. with three laps left and won by 0.064 of a second in the No. 3 Quaker State/Menards Special.

“I love the fact that of the short ovals it’s definitely challenging for the team and driver. It’s a tight oval; you have to work on getting the car balanced and working for you. As a series, in terms of how it rounds us out with road courses, street circuits and superspeedways, having a mile oval as part of that template is good. It’s a good market for us to be in, too.”

For 2010, the .875-mile Iowa Speedway is the only oval on the IZOD IndyCar Series less than 1.5 miles. The June 20 race produced 16 lead changes among seven drivers, including Tony Kanaan’s pass of Helio Castroneves with 10 laps left to secure his first victory since June 2008. Many drivers have lobbied to add more short ovals to future schedules.

"It will be a great track for us, similar to Milwaukee with those long straights and those tight corners," reigning IZOD IndyCar Series champion Dario Franchitti said. "I'm looking forward to racing here. You look at Iowa last week and that was one of the best races I've bene involved with as a driver.

"To add another short oval to the IZOD IndyCar Series schedule is cool. I think the cars and the race will sell themselves; the product at all tracks is fantastic."

New Hampshire International Speedway, which opened in 1990, was purchased in 2008 by Smith from Bob and Gary Bahre and renamed New Hampshire Motor Speedway. It is about an hour north of Boston and, according to the most recent census, more than 18 million people live within two hours of the picturesque venue.

“It's been my mission for three years to get IndyCar to New Hampshire on our schedule,” Gappens said. “As an Indiana native and a fan of open-wheeled racing, I strongly believe that the people of New Hampshire will embrace this new breed of speed much like they do NASCAR.

"It's gratifying to see it finally on the schedule and now it's sort of like the dog who chased the truck. I caught it, but now I have to do something with it. I promise I'm going to work hard to sell this new event to fans everywhere."
    Sounds interesting. :)
