Not sure if people have seen this?

It's been a slow death by a thousand cuts, but what a waste of an asset if it does close.

    SSE

discussed in depth over in Infrastructure

Lines that are not performing for IR should be given to private operators to run.

The closure of this is more than just just closing a regional railway line. It is a kick in the face for much needed tourism in Waterford city and surrounding counties.

It is Ironic that the Western Rail Corridor is about to be launched at the end of this month which is about the same time as the death knell of this route. This is only the start of it, Waterford to Limerick junction looks it could be next for the chop.

Suggestions have been put foreword for a line to run from Wexford Via Rosslare to waterford and then on through Limerick and connect with the WRC, these propositions have fallen on deaf ears as IE seem hell bent on running this line into the ground so t will never fall into the hands of private ownership..

The closure of this line will have a dramatic effect on the rail map of the South East of Ireland. Look how sparse the rail map is after the closure of these lines.

Busses are no substitute for rail lines, tourists favour trains because they are not cramped, they can walk around, enjoy a buffet, transport bicycles without hassle. There is also the prospect of running speciality and tourist trains on this line to subsidies maintenance costs and further enhance tourism..

People with property, houses and hotels along these lines will soon see their properties devalue as the lines fall into decay and tracks are ripped up. We have learned from our history books once a line has stopped it is very very costly to replace.

Currently the line is very poorly advertised, feeder services are practically non existent, time tables are are out of sync with other services so its no wonder that this line is unprofitable.

Some of you on the Waterford forum may not be aware of this thread in the C&T forum. It needs your support as much as the retention of the 24 hour Air Sea rescue helicopter service. :)
