Is anyone else peed off that you can't get Mothers Day Cards in Ireland that refer to 'Mammy' or 'Mam' or 'Ma'? They are all dedicated to 'Mum' or 'Mummy'.

I presume this is an English thing - I don't know of anyone who calls their Mother 'Mum' in Ireland.

Irish cards for Irish Mammies I say!

Totally agree, I prefer to give my mother a card with nothing on the outside (just a generic blank "flowery picture" on the outside type card) on Mother's Day than a "Mum" or "Mummy" card. It's really hard to get Mam or Mammy ones.

I can't stand "Mum" for some reason, just doesn't sound right to me- I don't really mind other people using it, but my mother has never been a Mum and if I have children there's no way I'd be a Mum either. It's Mam or Mammy- or around Cork/Kerry I like the way they say Mom, it's not the American Mom, it's the way they say it with the influence from Irish.

Anyway, I'm off to visit Wonderwoman, sorry I mean my Mam!

I searched and didn't find anything about this subject and this joined thread wasn't here when i posted. Do you really have to be a dick about it?!

It might be 'Mom' in the U.S.

But here in Ireland, it's Ma, Mam, or Mammy.

    Bloody yanks.. :D

    Edit: Just thinking about this.
I went to see an Irish made film recently, it was called ''Eamon''.
The story centred around a family consisting of two parents and a young child (bout 7 or 8 I think).
He kept on calling his mother ''mom'' and it did my feckin head in, as I've only ever heard that term used within an American enviroment.

Mom is generally cited as a term that has become popular due to American television.

With mum being it's British equivalent.

I'm Irish born and bred! Have never lived abroad. I honestly don't know anyone that calls their mum that. Well nobody of my age group anyway! (20s)

Maybe it's an oldie thing?? :pac:

It's Mom/Mum, always has been, always will be. Dubs and wannabe dubs are the only people in the world to say mam/ma. You really need to get out more and see the world...

Mines mammy & my kids call me mammy.. I only get called Maaaaaaaaaa when they need toilet roll or they are starving... all the other times its Mammy..... Ive always called mine Mammy but I do feel like a big tool when Im screaming mammy across the road to get her attention & every other " mom" turns around...Now they're the wannabe " Mammys"....:D

Got her an apron, oven gloves and a tea-towel - she was in tears. I know it was generous of me, but jeez, didn't think she'd be crying with joy...

I find that very hard to believe.

I call her "Mum" but often refer to her as "my mam" when talking to others about her. Probably stems from me calling her "Mam" when I was small. After that, I obviously became west Brit-ised... :pac:

Homemade card, lovely plant and a box of After Eights. Interesting conversation at 7am when she wanted me to eat the After Eights (ewww.. I hate chocolate..).

Then I cleaned, and shopped and made dinner (a martyr, me? :)) for her and my Mum. I made a chicken pie and she cut out a "M" and a "G" (for Mum and Gran) out of the pastry and put them on top - and then apparently had made me dinner..!:P

Best thing? She jumped on the rubbish in the wheelie bin for me without moaning. Priceless!

One of my brothers got my Mom an iron for Christmas once. Then he took it with him when he went back to college, like, two weeks later. Another brother got her a wheelbarrow for her birthday. My family sucks at giving presents.

I can remember my dad giving me money when I was a child to get a birthday present for my mother (he was in the pub and probably trying to avoid "grief").

I bought her a two bar electric heater.

I remember thinking I had done great - and I can still picture the disappointment on her face. :o
