Well in that case you should probably go vegitarian.
As cows are tearing up our planet as they are being over bred for human consumption.
This results in large amount of gases being released and caused damage to our planet.

I'm not very PC at all, yet I'd be very unhappy if every internet forum devolved into 4chan.

See if I'm feeling infantile I go to some forums, if I want to nerd out I go to another site, if I want casual chit-chat there's another site, if I want (semi-)reasonable political discussion there's forums I go to, if I want to ****, there's a few forum I go to, etc.

That's the lovely thing about the internet - you can have a variety of forums that cater to different people and sensibilities. And you can go to whatever ones best suit you.

    QFT.

There's another very popular site I use that has stopped taking new members because of muppetry and lack of moderation. Not good to see.

Far too many whingers on here who call people who debate with them pc, liberal, commie, pink shirted, studenty types.

    Oh come on K-9.

If anyone dares have an opinion that isn't liberal, they are labeled racists and BNP insults get thrown about.

I had the audacity to suggest that the 'Buy Irish' and 'Guaranteed Irish' campaigns were a success and I had ten people jumping down my throat implying I had a racist agenda.

You give the opinion that we let far too many immigrants into this country and that too seems to be enough for people to claim you are bigoted.

You cannot have an alternate political viewpoint to the populist one on Boards as far as I can see without scandalous and unfounded accusations being thrown around like confetti.

Which would you find more offensive? Being called a "Wanker" or a "Racist"?

Which has more of a negative stigma in today's society??

Well, I have reported posts for both of these 'personal abuse' incidents and it was only the name calling of 'wanker' that anything was done about.

i myself think boards is fairly pc a lot of the time which i dislike because i am constantly un-pc myself but there isn't many options for boards to be anything but pc when it is called on because there is too many clowns around here that will say the wrong thing to the wrong person at the wrong time and when that happens the attention will be put on the person(s) who are meant to be watching over the forums.obvious but true

People here just seem to have a lower tolerance for more 'edgy' stuff in general. Anyways, I was just wondering if anyone else agreed, and whether people think it's a good/bad thing. Seems more bad than good to me, but that's possibly just because I particularly like offensive jokes.

Did you ever consider the possibility that the posts you consider 'edgy' or 'un-pc' just, for the most part, are neither funny or enlightening?
The mods here, i've noticed, do a good job of letting any comment go if there is a modicum of sense/logic at its heart; if you get off on people spewing senseless hatred, commenting on youtube should satisfy your every need.

You're a popular poster on here and rightly so; you contribute a hell of lot to this site.
You haven't been stopped from expressing your opinion on here; people 'jumping down your throat' as you say, are simply people disagreeing with your point of view.
That's the very point of a site that facilitates disscussion.

However, I don't really have an issue with the Modding on this issue, think there has just been one recent time that I felt a decision was harsh, rest of the time it was fair call.

Fair enough. In that case those posters are wrong and you can argue your point with them as you would any other point; or simply ignore them.

Trust me I have tried, but I shouldn't have to argue that I am not a racist.

I think the definition of 'racist' has got very loose the past few years.

To be serious there is a thread or a forum for almost any mood people are in,there are checks and balances between mods decisions and C-mods and an admin if nescessary via the appeal mechanism.

having tried out some oversea's sites and taking into account that posters, mods, cmods, hmods are human it is a very fair site and mostly very civilised.

actually AH's is the one that has freaked me out the most by undermodding after a year as a member.
Generally all but the most crude posts on a forum are left alone.
Some of the unmoderated or really badly moderated sites on the net would make You puke and most do not allow for feedback or questioning,You p*ss the site owner off and it is simply goodbye.

it is a nice site to visit usually, dont know what more it could do to accomodate all but the most offensive posts that it does not do already.

How many times do I have to say that I was accused of having underlying racist beliefs for saying the 'Buy irish' campaign should be brought back in.

I'm hardly gonna complain cause people don't agree with me now.

And well you should, anyone arguing for 'Buy Irish' is clearly conservative, protectionist/isolationist, anti-EU, and likely racist.

I, on the other hand, try to convince everyone to 'Buy Local' since I'm liberal, pro-environment, anti-fossil fuel/climate change, and anti-consumerist ;)

i don't think there is any such thing as "politically correct"...there are just statements which are racist/sexist/classist/ableist/what have you, and statements that are not, and i am very happy that Boards have certain standards which do not accept the former.

when people say things like "it's political correctness gone mad!" it really just...makes me cringe and roll my eyes, and it's statements like that which do make me judge someone as being ignorant.. i just feel like people who think that way really just don't get it.

humour is one thing, and i don't think there is any topic that can't be joked about in one way or another. Though I still think that on such a large public forum like this, it's sensible to ban certain kinds of jokes.

so yeah, i'm pretty satisfied with the standard of Boards.

as for the modding, since someone brought that up, I really appreciate how well this place is modded. i was on a very popular forum a few years ago, and i just stopped using it because i was sick of expending all my energy on defending myself against personal attacks so every thread i joined in on became an argument...i know you don't haaave to get sucked into that thing but it can be hard when you make one little post about your own experience and suddenly everyone is trying to slag you to pieces because you're not in their little clique -i find it hard to not stick up for myself! and i'm not certainly not an antagonistic poster at all, but if my opinion differed at all from everyone else's i got so much stick from people ripping on me. i didn't consider myself bullied, like it didn't hurt my feelings or anything, but certainly it got to the point where posting wasn't worth it because of the hassle people were going to give me. when i [cautiously at first] joined this place i couldn't get over how NICE and respectful everyone was haha.

when people say things like "it's political correctness gone mad!".

It's gotten to the stage now where I read people saying:

"I hate when people say 'political correctness gone mad'"

.. a thousand times more that I actually read people saying that political
    has gone mad.

Same with people who say: "Don't tell me you are about to say 'I'm not a racist but..'".

It's just boring at this stage, it has become more of a cliche now for people to say they hate these things that it actually is for anyone to say it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 793 ✭✭✭vicecreamsundae

ha well we are obviously living in parrallel universes because if that were the case in my experience, i wouldn't be complaining about it :P

i'm not just saying this, i've honestly never heard anyone strike up a conversation in real life by saying "i'm tired of people saying political correctness gone mad" etc.even i don't tend to go around making conversations out of it, and only point it out in response to people claiming PC has gone too far. i have however heard countless conversations started on how "crazy" it is that we "can't say invalid/colored/chairman." oh no, people are taking away my liberties to use inaccurate or offensive language! i feel so hard done by!

it just bothers me because to me it is akin to somebody complaining "pfft, lads we are being far too informed and respectful of things these days altogether!" you know? i just don't see the logic in getting annoyed about that.

I am always pretty amused by people like vicecreamsundae, who keep running into bigots despite being sensitive souls. I have never heard anybody say that "it's appalling we cant say 'colored'" anymore ( and exactly when did Irish people ever use that term, or spell that way?), but the more PC the poster is the more he is plagued by people coming up to him, every moment of every day, upsetting his sensibilities by using either non-PC language, or complaining about "PC gone mad". Clearly these guys are sensitive souls off the internet, and nobody has ever learned of their disquiet.

Be a bit tougher with the bigots in real life, wont you vicecreamsundae.

TBH when it comes to deaths I don't mind cracking jokes cos thats how people cope with things, laugh at them, or they do in my experience with people i know who've shuffled off the mortal coil

Plenty of Irish people [older generations in particular] use the term colored [or coloured if it's so important to you] to refer to people who are not white. It's actually not that uncommon AT ALL. my parents use it, my old co-workers used it, and so do many others.

Sensitive soul? aw, i'm so emasculated! should i try more to be a tough, manly man like you who is so unaware of my white, hetero male privilege that i don't see the problem with the implicit use of racist/sexist etc language? no thanks.

I'm not a sensitive soul. Just more informed or educated about things like this than you. Don't worry about it, simple mistake.

btw, assuming i am male by default because i didn't say anything which identifies me as female is just the cherry on top :)

LOL. You really have fallen for the ideology of the day, hook line and sinker. Like a trained seal.

It reminds me of a friend who, while working in the US was taken to a "diversity" group for "Persons of Privilege". he was sarcastically delighted. He thought that he would get to network with the kind of people who hang at the Hamtons, meet the Kennedys, the Rothschilds, the Hiltons, the Gate's, or - alternatively an Arab billionaire, or a Mexican Oil magnate.

Well , if the company employed the latter - presumambly as baord members - they wouldn't have been invited. Particularly if they were female.

Who was there? Low ranking pasty faced office schlebs.

the amount of brain washing in PC is so intense that the people who claim it doesnt exist prove it in their language. You, my son, are not privileged or powerful. You are probably a powerless office schleb, the new proletariat. Real power knows when it is powerful, and powerful people are not dragged in meetings to get harangued on their power. Thats for schlebs.
btw, assuming i am male by default because i didn't say anything which identifies me as female is just the cherry on top

Lol. I didnt say I was a guy either.

    has gone mad.

Same with people who say: "Don't tell me you are about to say 'I'm not a racist but..'".

It's just boring at this stage, it has become more of a cliche now for people to say they hate these things that it actually is for anyone to say it.
Well here, nearly always when someone says "political correctness gone MAD!!!" it's either not the case, or it isn't even political correctness at all.
Some idiots think being concerned about a person's welfare is "political correctness" ffs...

I do agree with you though that "I'm not racist but" isn't always uttered by people who actually are racist.
Some OTT right-on types can be awfully bigoted too and it's not nice to see them sneering at people who might have conservative views that don't tally with theirs, but which they're still able articulate reasonably and back up well.
