Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hi all,
I'm looking for a tripod to replace my all-in-one Manfrotto tripod which while light has a pretty bad head adjustment, it doesn't tighten properly and the whole thing could do with being more sturdy.

I take my tripod hiking so something as light and sturdy as possible with a fast leg release would be great.

    Any suggestions welcome!

    will hold:
    Canon 5dMkii
    Canon 24-70 f2.8L
    Canon 70-200 f4 L
    Sigma 50mm f1.4
    Canon 17-40 F4L

    Cheers,
    Grif

    I have these:
    http://www.warehouseexpress.com/buy-manfrotto-055xprob-tripod/p1019760
    with this head:

Very heavy but super sturdy, even with a 400mm Sigma lens attached to my 5dmkii with battery grip there is no movement at all even when using the 90 degree centre column setting. Quick to deploy, tall, very strong and a sure bet no other people are going to encroach on your photo space.

If I had of researched it a bit more before hand I would have still gone for the same head but i would have got these lovely legs or similar:

    Those Carbon legs look great.
This will be going on the back of my backpack so weight is an issue

I use the 498 head and it's a fantastic ball and socket head which I think is better than the 3d ones.

I have one of those 3 way heads, and have tried the ballheads, and I'd probably now come down firmly on the side of the ballheads. I've gone hiking once or twice with my manfrotto, and aside from the weight of the entire thing, the three way heads are a complete PITA. try climbing a mountain with one of the adjustment knobs poking you in the head, or the kidneys. Plus there's the hassle of adjusting each axis seperately. I think they're overkill for anything other than the heaviest kit.

yea, i tend to agree, 3way adjustment on my current takes up time that could be spent shooting. Problem with current one is once i set angle it moves out when i tighten. It can also drift a bit. Plus I could do with a level.
