Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Radar detectors/Gatso detectors/Road Angel devices - and the law

Inspired by the other thread which was closed....

S.I. No. 50/1991 — Road Traffic (Speed Meter Detectors) Regulations, 1991, bars their import and use in a public place, but Ireland seems to be alone in this.

Their use in the UK for example is acceptable as they cause the driver to slow down, and it's all about road safety and not revenue generation (or shooting fish in a barrel).

The gardaí say Satnav units with POIs of fixed speed cameras are ok - and so they should be as they are not speed meter detectors.

Which leads me back to the original thread which -Chris- locked. Some units (which I believe includes some Road Angels) do not have detection equipment, but are essentially basic satnav/GPS units which rely on a POI type locations, and are legal.

Should this law be repealed in Ireland? Is it about catching people out, or is it about road safety? Is there any point in even having this law considering devices that don't have detectors are legal?

Thousands of Brits have found out that Ireland is not alone in this when they were stopped by the Gendarmerie :D

Just on the side ...don't ever bring one into Switzerland. They have draconian fines for that sort of thing

The French do great republics and lovely women, but they're not really the template to use for anything else ;)

I could be wrong here, but I know of no other country in the EU (15) apart from the UK where radar detectors are legal...

There's one spot mentioned there which I'm 100% sure doesn't have a fixed speed camera. Does it include mobile cameras ?

Yes. A large percentage of mobile speed checks are supposed to take place in these high-priority areas.
